Western RPGs started it all you know. What ones are you trying to play, the overhyped mainstream ones that are largely crap? Try playing Ultima or Wizardry, those games are awesome. For a little more modern, I think the first two Fallout and Diablo games are great too.

What are you looking for: good gameplay or good story&writing or beautiful worlds? Good WRPGs deliver on the first two, more so than good JRPGs, just as long as you stay away from modern WRPGs. If you're looking for a game that above everything else looks nice, colorful and has a storybook charm to it, you won't find that from WRPGs. Many WRPGs do have beautiful worlds and they put a lot of effort into creating lore by writing fictional books in the games and so on, but pretty much all WRPGs stick to more realistic artstyle. Try adventure games if you want to see a Western version of the oldschool JRPG look.
Which ones have you played btw?

If you wanna get into Western RPGs I say skip the overhyped AAA games (Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3) and the overly difficult/dense originators (Ultima, Wizardry, M&M).

The sweet spot for me is the 1990s/early 2000s stuff: Betrayal at Krondor, Baldur's Gate I & II, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, etc...

Don't forget Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Fallout 1&2, Lands of Lore, Gothic, Quest for Glory, Jagged Alliance 2, Anachronox, Arx Fatalis, Temple of Elemental Evil, Deus Ex, System Shock 2 and Wizardry 8 :) WRPGs had two golden ages, first was late 1980s-1993 and the second in 1997-2002. Late 1980s and early 1990s RPGs are considered by hardcore retro/RPG gamers to be the best RPGs of all time, but they're too demanding and graphically unappealing for most people. Late 1990s and early 2000s WRPGs focused on story and dialogue (and in many cases experimenting with battle systems, like Diablo and System Shock) where as many of those earlier golden age games were a kin to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (focused on hard turn based combat and dungeon crawling while having more minimal story). Although that's not to say that there weren't well written or story based WRPGs back then, Ultima 5 and Ultima 7 are still unmatched in many ways.

I agree, ten fold.

Are those three mentioned games great? Hell if I know even though I own all three. Even The Legend of Zelda has a fair share of bulls#iting, but most of the time in said games you just goof around or run or perform wacky combat aka wombat.

My defining unpopular gaming opinion was just that^ I don't like over convoluted games. My posts do not reflect this (especially this one) as if you met me you would know I am very succinct.

I like my games to be the same. Get to the point.

Filler is fine if it serves a purpose, but I would enjoy this gens games much more if they nixed 40% of non-playable scenes. I appreciate the developers considered I would need to leak the lizard, but I prefer a game that flows.

I'm not sure if you're even making the argument, but a convoluted game (either complex gameplay mechanics or intricate storyline, or both) can be very focused and cohesive with little to no filler.

So basically, don't start with Bethesda is what you're saying.

Bethesda is the Idea Factory of WRPGs.

Ehh I would have to disagree here. Bethesda RPGs are mostly well regarded. This is one of the few places on the internet I have visited where they aren't as well liked.
