WRPGs had two golden ages, first was late 1980s-1993 and the second in 1997-2002. Late 1980s and early 1990s RPGs are considered by hardcore retro/RPG gamers to be the best RPGs of all time, but they're too demanding and graphically unappealing for most people. Late 1990s and early 2000s WRPGs focused on story and dialogue (and in many cases experimenting with battle systems, like Diablo and System Shock) where as many of those earlier golden age games were a kin to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (focused on hard turn based combat and dungeon crawling while having more minimal story). Although that's not to say that there weren't well written or story based WRPGs back then, Ultima 5 and Ultima 7 are still unmatched in many ways.
