I suspect that Tom Cruise is like Dollhouse; when he's going to do a movie he has his crazy normal personality brain-wiped out and an actor personality uploaded in.Sano wrote:I tried to watch Oblivion, I just couldn't get into it.. it was just lacking in keeping me interested. Not so fond of Tom Cruise as a person, but he is a great actor and his acting in this movie was good. As well as the always awesome Morgan Freeman.
What was the last movie you've seen?

Last night, my wife and I watched the notorious flop:

John Carter (2012). Basically, I discovered that Disney spent a ton of money making an incredibly pulpy science fiction film that probably would have done a lot better if it had been released 25 years earlier. Exceptionally poor marketing decisions aside, however, I genuinely enjoyed the film. Once I recognized it for what it is - an old-fashioned blend of science fiction and high fantasy - and compared it to other films in that genre, I thought it was quite good. The lead was a bit miscast, but the characters were well-conceived. The dialogue was appropriately hoaky, and the film has some great, genuinely exciting set pieces. Moreover - and most importantly - the film is fun. Unlike other recent science fiction films, it does not attempt to explain everything (I am still a bit confused as to the antagonists' motivations), and it lacks anything resembling self-importance.
In sum, do not let this movie's poor box office performance deter you from seeing it. If you go in expecting something more like Dune, Krull, or Masters of the Universe rather than something like Star Wars or The Lord of The Rings, you will not be disappointed.

Robocop review. Not that bad after all! Just finished watching Robocop 3 and Death Wish back-to-back. R3 drops all pretense to logic and common sense.
And those android swordsmen, crappiest villains of all time?

Y'know how I said I checked out a Studio Ghibli film recently? Well I watched and loved it.
The film in question?

Nausicaa!!
Funny story: I once checked out the graphic novel from the library but ultimately never read it, though it's not the first time I ever checked out a book and never finished it.

I watched this last night for the first time:

And as I realized once again, I was meant to live in the 80s, but unfortunately I was just born in them. Amazing movie and what I really loved about it is how much character development and drama they could get out the interactions between 5 archetypes.
And of course this

Saw Wolf of Wall Street last night - I don't see the Goodfellas or "most Scorceseiest Scorcese movie" arguments at all, Luke. I think The Departed is the most Scorceseiest film, and if anything Wolf of Wall Street was a bit of a departure for him in some ways (the subject matter, the type of supporting cast, the comedic bent, etc.). I'm not saying some tell tale signs aren't there (e.g. rock versions of pop tunes, the pacing around the dramatic peaks, flashbacks/forwards, some of the editing techniques, etc.), but other than having a rise and fall tied to drugs and money, Leo's character and story isn't too much like Liotta's. For one, Liotta was somewhat sympathetic whereas Leo is a total ass from the get go...
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I wasn't the one who said "most Scoreseiest", but I did find parallels to Goodfellas. Sure Leo's character starts off as despicable, but it doesn't take long for Ray's character to be the same.dsheinem wrote:Saw Wolf of Wall Street last night - I don't see the Goodfellas or "most Scorceseiest Scorcese movie" arguments at all, Luke.
