PC build thread
Re: PC build thread
Did they phase out the WD Green's? I want to get another 6TB HDD sometime soon. Maybe the Black will be better since this next one I plan to migrate my Steam files to, but otherwise it's just more space I want for media to replace a 1TB HDD with.
Re: PC build thread
Yes and no. They folded them into the Blue lineup. More or less, if you want a 5400rpm "Green" drive, look for the models ending in X. If you want the mainstream 7200rpm drive that the Blues used to be, look for ones ending in Z (thought that seems to be limited to a single 1TB model at this point).Xeogred wrote:Did they phase out the WD Green's? That said, if the higher price doesn't deter you, go with a Black model. Performance (especially for a Steam library), and a longer warranty.

Re: PC build thread
I finally got some new hardware.
It's a interim upgrade, as I didn't change the CPU (AMD FX-8320). But, some very needed upgrades happened.
New CPU cooler, which was desperately needed (hey look, it can actually go to 100% utilization now), Filled out the ram (32GB DDR3 1866), a new GPU ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 1060 6GB, and an SSD (finally). The SSD isn't set up yet.
I was planning on going "crazy" when it came to the GPU, but cooler heads prevailed, I went for something quite a bit lower end, but it also was almost $150 less. Overall, I'm not disappointed.
Most games I've tried (that I own) I can easily use superscaling (I think nvidia calls it Dynamic Super Resolution) to 4K and get 60+ fps even with settings up. The only game I've tried where it's not so smooth is GTA5 (and that's using the driver's scaling, not the game's, the game's implementation just destroys performance) And even there, it would still be in the 30s ... I just ... don't want it to run that low. The upside is I have a 1080P monitor, so the range of what I can run stuff at is pretty liberal. Even 2x Scaling looks really good. Some games might be limited to native resolution, though ... boo hoo.
ASUS has made this thing such that it doesn't actually need the fan until it reaches 60ºC. It has "0db" fan modes, but even with the fan on, it's extremely quiet. I also didn't realize this is an ROG card, so it's got like LEDs on it. Not my thing, but I can actually set them to GPU temperature, so green to red, I can just look down and see how the thing is doing. Awesome.

Re: PC build thread
Thanks for input isiolia. I'll probably get a Black then!
Cronozilla, got the founders edition 1060 myself and have been loving it.
Mankind Divided seemed a little finicky, but it just felt like a slightly poorly optimized game in general. Witcher 3 on the other hand feels like it's been the best test thrown at this card, it's running perfectly on high settings with the fancy hair settings turned off (apparently the most demanding options in the game from what I read haha). 1080p/60FPS on my 50" TV.

Re: PC build thread
Ugh, Jesus, this graphics card is the best thing that happened for me this month.
I am really enjoying the card. It's really beyond expectation, especially for the price. Easily, the highest performing (per capita) graphics card I've ever had. So now, I await the next poorly optimized port to really put it to the test! The only test that matters: Will it run console games?

Re: PC build thread
Lovely, nice and clean build. Wish I had the money to jump onto the X99 platform (not that I need it, Z170 does me fine, but who doesn't love more headroom).
Do you do video editing on that rig?

Well my older gaming computer crapped out so i was "forced" to build a more relevant oneemwearz wrote:Lovely, nice and clean build. Wish I had the money to jump onto the X99 platform (not that I need it, Z170 does me fine, but who doesn't love more headroom).

I dont do any video editing...in fact i really only play counter strike...and not even the new one...so it may be a bit overkill
Re: PC build thread
So my PC is 4 years old at this point, and I'm debating putting together a new one. I'm not really feeling a power crunch yet, so I can certainly hold off for another year or so. I'm curious what your guys' thoughts are. Here's what I'm currently rocking:
2x GTX670 SLI
i7-3930K
16 GB (4x4) RAM
And then the necessary supporting stuff (correct socket motherboard, optical drives, HDDs, etc). One thing that helps is since I use my PC on my TV I only need to push 1920x1080.
