SLI has pretty big scaling issue with some games, with some not supporting it at all. Games that support it properly, seem to get a tiny leg up on the dual 970's, however they are cherry picked benchmarks. There is also the drain on your PSU and the extra heat you bring into your case.

You would also hit the 3.5GB buffer wall, which would restrict a lot of the extra power from your card. Meaning using things like AA, high res textures, advanced lighting, shaders, etc. Would all leave you close to where you are now.

I just can't see any reason to SLI 970's, investing into 3.5GB of VRAM is not a smart idea anymore, you would be investing in being stuck at 1080P (or 1440P if you lowered VRAM heavy settings).

You are far better off to sell your 970 and use the money towards a GTX 1070, get the higher performance with perfect scaling (as it does not have to do any) and the 225%+ increase in available VRAM.

Obviously just my opinion.

EDIT:
If I was you I would sit this generation out completely. If you are gaming at 1080P@60FPS. The GTX970 will hold you without any issues at all and when you get to the point where it won't anymore, the 3.5GB will bottleneck you anyway, meaning SLI is not a viable option.

yeah that is pretty much a lot of the same things I was thinking about. At any rate, like I said, I am not in need of a new GPU right so don't plan to upgrade that department until I feel like there's a real reason to.

I edited it into my other post, but I think you missed it.

How do you find your VRAM usage is at the moment? How close are you getting to 3.5GB running at 1440P in modern titles?

I know in games like Mirrors Edge Catalyst, I am already having to lower settings at 1080P@75Hz because I am capping out my VRAM (4GB R9 290).

At anyrate! VRAM will be the limiting factor for you and SLI won't help that.

honestly, I've not done any monitoring of actual numbers. Probably because I've never felt any hits to performance that even made me wonder. Though I can't say that anything I've played recently has been incredibly demanding... Rise Of The Tomb Raider or Doom would probably be it. And even maxed out neither of those seem like resource hogs considering.

A GTX 1070 handily outdoes a 980Ti, which in turn trades blows with SLI GTX 970s.

Generally speaking, a single card is preferable, if one exists that can manage the performance desired. Multi-GPU setups obviously require more power, generate more heat, and can introduce issues like micro stutter. On top of that, the performance boost isn't consistent, and multi-GPU may not be supported at all in some cases. For example, Unreal Engine 4 doesn't support it outside of nVidia Gameworks VR, which is also odd in that a lot of VR stuff hasn't supported multi-GPU either...

^ It is a TN. Which is perfect for gaming, nice a low response time.

I have this motherboard according to the docs I thought it could only take a 95w CPU, but looking at the supported (and outdated) CPU list there are some 125w CPSs listed.
Could I get an 8 core 125w AMD FX chip to run on my rig instead of the six core 6300 I currently have?
