Copypasted from another forum:
I've been trying to watch some old movies that heavily inspired video games so it only made sense that I watched Alien, as it's one of the most directly riped-off movies out there in game terms, and I was dissapointed to find that even if the film is well-made I couldn't bring myself to like it.
Why? Because the characters are a bunch of drooling morons.
The very start of the film can be excused and the writers don't make an attempt to hide that fact that bringing an alien life form is a terrible move but as soon as the bloody things starts spewing acid I started to feel my sympathy for the characters waning. But that's all right, I can take it, it's a very well-made film.
Some scenes and a special effects failure later, the crew decides to go kill it and after splitting in teams they suddenly decide to leave one of the characters alone so he can fetch the cat on his own without any weapons in a poorly-lite spaceship. It's like they writers decided they needed to kill another character so they make all characters forget about what the hell was happening. He gets killed, it almost seems the cat had a part in it, fuck it.
These amnesia strikes them again as for some reason they send the captain through a tight airlock alone and with a weapon that is more likely to kill him than the actual Alien. He gets killed because the Communications Officer couldn't tell which way was left because she's a moron.
Fortunately the now captain Ripley has a bit of common sense and discovers some idiotic plot to retrive the alien life form that was obviously the remant of a high-budget operation that had all of its corners cut down. All right, at least that is solved.
However this discovery leaves Ripley without the memories of the last two times splitting the party got someone killed so she decided to leave the remaining crew members alone so she can fetch the cat. This leads to his crew getting killed so she waves back and forth, activates the ship self-destruct mechanism and tries to leave.
(It has been brought to my attention that the idea of stuffing a civilian ship with explosives not only was moronic on its own, apparently its installation required a drastic reduction in the illumination budget).
Of course leaving would be too easy so she tries to fetch the cat AGAIN probably because it's the only thing that didn't raise objections to her sound survival plans and because it planned it ALL ALONG. She spends so much time she has to deactivate the self-destruct sequence only to it being set in motion again, probably more proof of the designers of the ship being morons.
She runs, she gets into the hatch and flies away but a long scene shows us that the alien was actually sleeping in the background instead of killing her when he had the chance, yet another example of someone being a moron and Ripley is forced to drain the ship of oxigen as they discussed doing during the first part of the film, proving yet again that the crew was full of morons.
In other words, the actions of the characters were so stupid and so contrary to their survival that I couldn't care about them even a little which made me dislike an otherwise very well-made film.
Good thing I'm not a movie critic, I suppose.

Alien has one of the most believable spaceship crews among sci-fi movies. Nobody has super powers. Nobody does everything perfect or always makes the right decision. They're all flawed believable people just doing their job when things out of the ordinary start happening and they make mistakes under pressure. They all are a little cranky after being cooped up together for the long voyage, yet they are getting along at dinner after a period of tension and do try to save each other and the cat despite the threat.General_Norris wrote:Because the characters are a bunch of drooling morons. normal working people who got fucked over by the company they work for and are understandably freaked the fuck out and trying to do the best they can under the terrible circumstances.
If you didn't like it, that's fine. But the crew were not drooling morons even if self destruct systems in most sci-fi ships are really a silly and seemingly pointless thing to have.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I just watched The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958). The special effects held up quite well and the plot was surprisingly original for a film that's more than half a century old. At the beginning of the film, Sinbad and his crew, while exploring an island, discover the main villain, Sokurah the Magician, fleeing from a giant cyclops. Sinbad and his crew rescue the magician and escape from the island, but the magician loses his genie's lamp during the fight. Sokurah tries to convince Sinbad to go back to the island for his lamp, but Sinbad refuses to risk the lives of his crew. Later, Sokurah tricks Sinbad into going to the island for another reason. It's an interesting plot because up until the climax the villain and hero, despite either not trusting the other, are companions fighting together during the entire journey. That's not something you see very often in film.
Unfortunately, the characters aren't that interesting and the acting is pitiful. I'm not comparing the acting to modern day standards, but even compared to other older films such as The Mummy (1932) it's terrible. The actors feel like they're reading directly from the script and I swear that the leading damsel in distress was doped up for the entire shoot. However, Sokurah was pretty good.
Overall, it was okay. I'm glad I watched it. Next, I'll check out the sequel in the Sinbad trilogy, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, with Tom Baker as the villain. Sinbad vs The Fourth Doctor. How can that not be good?

It was good. An enjoyable 3 hours. This was the first book I've read where I watched the movie later and they added a lot of stuff as they do in most book based movies from what I hear. But it's a fun and entertaining watch alltogether. If you're a Hobbit and/or Lord of the rings fan then check it out. Just don't go in expecting LOTR tier stuff like I did though.
