Wait... So when the R5 was launching some naysayers said it was a pointless emulation machine that couldn't do anything beyond what you could already do with a PC.

And now that it launched they're upset it won't load ROMs or use USB controllers....... like a PC.

Anyway, this thing rules. My best console purchase of the last five years easily.

It is cool, but is still redundant for me really.

Totally understand that mentality. If I had room for a full on CRT setup that could connect to my home theater, I'd feel the same way...but I don't, so this has completely reinvigorated my retro gaming. Also I don't have to worry about batteries dying in my cartridges.

I also have a PC hooked up to my main game room TV. And that does the trick.

That's kinda what I was getting at. There are plenty of other avenues to play roms on, so why have a shit fit over this not being able to.

Yes to all of that. Absolutely love my Retron 5. I'm using it more for GBA quite honestly, but even the NES stuff is great too, and of course since I never had a Genesis this works well for that too.

Entitlement types, because it's easier to bitch when there's a threat than to just leave it alone and move along. It's just like any other nit that wants to buy a console, hack it, then get all pissed off and bitchy when the company revises the board, rewrites the holes out of the firmware or whatever else to stop them. They feel they've bought the hardware, they're entitled to do anything with it while retaining the original features. And well, you know, that's just not how it works because that ultimately takes the profit out of the hardware for the console makers, just as having ROMS run on this will take money out of their pocket in their eyes when the lawyers come knocking for selling the next R4 or some other Lik-Sang worthy take down stuff.

Personally I put up my nes top loader and snes for this thing, and while I do play them, it's mostly for the famicom and gba since I got it since those resales wise haven't been wrecked by greedy trolls. Lately I've become sickened enough by it on the whole I've got back into buying the occasional Lego set and doing that as the prices on those compared are flat and they're relaxing.

Yeah the only reason I got mine was to eliminate some of the "console stack" since now my room looks 10x better without it to some extent. Plus I gained the ability to play genesis/md  The patch thing is just a plus for me

My systems: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, original gba, gba sp(001), ds lite, 3ds, vita, psp, PSone(101 model) ps2, ps3(320gb model), ps4, retron 5, and Dreamcast.

I got a chance to visit the Hyperkin booth yesterday at the Classic Gaming Expo in Vegas. I had a nice long chat with Edward about the Retron 5 and I got some interesting insight. Basically they are getting huge shipments everyday and continue to send them out to retailers as fast as they possibly can. They are also doing everything in their power to stop the retailers from reselling them on ebay at inflated prices.
They are already considering what to include on future products and as you would guess, the N64 support is high on the list. I asked about other cart support such as TurboGrafx and Game Gear and there were currently no plans to support those although they have been discussed in the past.
I was particularly disappointed about the Game Gear situation since there are no current methods to allow for GG games to be played on the TV without hacking your GG at a large expense with mixed results. Edward replied that there really wasn't any demand for such a solution.
Perhaps if some of us posted on their Facebook page that we would be interested in such a solution (adding GG slot to next Retron or a cart adapter to put it in one of the other slots), then perhaps they would revisit the GG support idea. Surely there is as much or demand for a GG solution as there was for a Famicom slot, and they took a several month delay on Retron 5 just to get the Famicom slot working properly......

I could see adding the N64 if it could be done smoothly in that emulation environment, but the GG if he says he's has so few requests I'd believe it. I think it would fall to the same on the TG16 just being old enough and niche enough you won't see enough asking to cover the costs of adding, selling, and risking it works out.
