Yup. I'm getting rid of all my consoles/handhelds. It's something I had already been toying with for a while before I tried getting back into collecting over the Winter. That last stint really drove home for me why it was I got out of console collecting to begin with.

I actually don't. My wife has some NES games, but I don't. She is keeping her consoles btw. I'm just getting rid of my stuff.

So, if you guys were going to choose one fairly pricy game to buy, and only one, what would you choose?

I want to choose something expensive that I normally wouldn't buy as a one off to be my 1000th game on my backloggery, but I'm actually struggling to decide. I generally want a game that meets the following criteria:

1. I've never played it before
2. It's out of my usual price range
3. It's not easily and cheaply available on other systems or as a download (with the exception of Treasure games, because I'd like to own their whole library at some point)
4. I'm buying it because it's a game I've legitimately wanted for some time, not just because it's expensive (so for example, no Terranigma for me)

Some ideas I had so far:
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
    Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
    Alien Soldier (Mega Drive)
    Knuckles Chaotix (32X)
    Snatcher (Mega CD)
    Steel Battalion (XBox)
Anyone else have any suggestions?

Three that I really want in my collection but I've actually beaten are Megaman 7, X2 and X3. I'm a fan of the series and would like the games in their original versions but damn those prices.

Now some games that I've not played but want to would be Crusader of Centy (Genesis) and Hagane (Snes)

To narrow things down a little bit, possibly, I would say nicks Snatcher on the Sega CD. Kojima has torn that version apart on multiple occasions due to how far from his vision it was. (I guess he wasn't consulted about it at all, either.) If you were to listen to him--and I don't know if translations exist--then one of the PC versions, or the PC Engine version is the way to go for the 'authentic experience.'

I didn't really think you liked Sonic games. (?) I like Chaotix, but it throws a real monkey wrench into the standard Genesis formula. Stages are way more vertical; It's a bit like Sonic CD with rubber band mechanics. I don't know if I'd recommend dropping bank on it unless you were sure you actually like it.

I would probably go with Panzer Dragoon Saga from that list, personally. How about Contra: Hard Corps on the Genesis, though?

I'm a little confused, though: Why don't you want Terranigma?

Interesting about Snatcher. I'd never heard that before.

I actually love old-school Sonic games. I adore Sonic 1 & 2, I like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic 1 for Master System was not only my first video games, but also one of my absolute favourites. I also like the GBA games and the DS ones too. It's the 3D ones and most of the Game Gear ones I'm more iffy on (and even then, I still find them enjoyable in their own way. Knuckles Chaotix was more of a sentimental pick - game #1 is a Sonic series game, so #1000 could be too. Also, as a kid Knuckles was my favourite character, and I remember thinking Knuckles Chaotix looked cool when they advertised it in Sonic the Comic

Although I like Contra, I've never been crazy about it. Hard Corps looks a lot of fun, but it's just crappy ol' Probotector over here.

As for Terranigma I have nothing at all against it, I'm just drowning in RPGs as is and haven't ever had any major desire to play it. If I bought Terranigma, it'd be more for it's legacy as a rare/pricy game rather than because it's something I've always wanted to try. That's what I'm hoping to avoid!

I wasn't crazy about MegaMan X. I think those 3 I'd prefer to just get on Virtual Console or something to save cash as it's not something I'd be desperate to own physically.

Hagane always looked kinda cheap and not much fun to me. I already own Crusader of Centy - the PAL copy (which is called Soleil) is significantly cheaper than the US version.

Either that or Steel Battalion. The biggest consideration regarding Steel Battalion is the game requires the controller, making the controller a very finite resource that will get harder and harder to find as time goes on. PDS you would still be able to play through things like emulation or mod chips, though it wouldn't be the original disks.
