Heh, if this is the case, then I don't care for the premise either.

I don't think enjoying sex should be portrayed as "degrading" or "sick." Unless we're talking rape or something.
So a film like Irreversible is ok, but a film chronicling a person's downfall due to their sex obsessed mental illness isn't?

For the record, I have no idea if this is actually the goal of Nymphomaniac, because I haven't seen it. But judging from what I saw in that trailer, I don't think there's any way this movie will have a positive view of the lead's problem.

One is fake, the other is not.

One person puts on makeup, the other is getting paid for sex.

Short shots of simulated sex can be powerful. A quick shot of a wife cheating on her husband or vice versa, a young girl threatened with rape, or the infamous rape scene in PULP FICTION. But actual blowjobs on a set turn me the fuck off like you wouldn't believe. Again, that's because there is no reason for it and doesn't serve a purpose.

Do I think Sharon Stone whored herself out? Not at all. The leg crossing scene wasn't gratuitous, and the scene wasn't filmed just to show her privates; it was a character establishing moment. It showed just how manipulative she could be and lasted what, three seconds? But girls spitting out splooge for comical relief? Pass.

I don't think I'd go so far as to say something is/isn't "okay," especially when we're pretty much just speculating on a movie that I really know next to nothing about. I can gripe about things I don't like, sure, but I don't really think anything should be "taboo" when it comes to art.

Generally speaking, I just think our society has some really weird attitudes about sex. (Really, this is all I should've probably posted)

Ideally, I think at worst this should be seen as the same level as toilet humor. Low brow, sure, but I don't think it should be off limits.

In America, yes.

But in places like Europe, it's typically the inverse, where bloodshed was the line. Ironically, a lot of the greatest horror and splatterpunk films of days past (and even today) come from Europe.

If that is what they are intending to do with the movie, making the acts as "degrading filth" would fit the intention of the movie well. Of course, I'm not a person who believes all sex outside of rape is beautiful and right like some do, so I'd probably get the premise more than others might.

Looked up this Nymphomaniac movie on Wikipedia and a few things jumped out at me.

"The uncut, 5 hour version will not be released until sometime in 2014."
"To produce scenes of unsimulated sex, Von Trier is having the genitals of porn actors digitally composited onto the bodies of the film's cast."
"Shia LaBeouf"

Sounds like the worst movie of all time.

Well I believe his other film featured willem dafoe's balls being smashed with a hammer and then a woman jerking him off til he shot blood. If there's some sort of statement or art to his movies it's beyond me. It seems more likely to me that all his films are one big joke about how he can get actors to do anything, and in 50 years he'll point at them all and laugh.
