I recommend finding an MSX game. So easy to run via emulation, especially since so many are cartridges. First two Metal Gear games and Vampire Killer are the "obvious" picks. Then there are games like Knightmare, SD Snatcher, Penguin Adventure, and Space Manbow which are well-known to MSX fans but their status as "classics" is certainly debatable.
(Yes those are all Konami games. Konami ruled the MSX and FDS.)
Be aware that some games have different MSX and MSX2 versions.

Aw, dang it, now y'all are tempting me into making some sort of list for this. I'd love to play through either of those Metal Gear games. I've tried several times, actually. And I have access to them through MGS3: Subsistence (and also emulators, of course).

I bought the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection a while back just so I could play the only English localizations of Metal Gear 1 and 2. Haven't gotten around to it yet, but I just gotta be in a very certain mood to delve into Metal Gear in the first place, no matter which one it is.

Dune 2 is pretty significant as an RTS. Lots of major mechanics defined there.
That said, Command & Conquer is much more fun to play. I'd recommend that. I love it.
Obviously there are the Warcraft and Starcraft games as options too.
Other options would include the Age of Empires games, early entries in the Total War series, something like an early Civilization game - you#re certainly not short on options.
And I'm not even a PC gamer, I bet Fast and Popo could give you one hell of a long list.

I know part of the "summer games challenge" is playing retro classics, but I'm just going to play what I want, sanctioned classic or not. My personal rule for this is no game can be newer than 1999. Definitely checking out MSX stuff first.

I've never played a C&C game. Despite owning lots of them. This might be the way I go.
I forgot about Quest For Glory 1. I've been meaning to beat that one forever. I'd like to beat the whole series really, as I've only ever finished QFG2. So yeah, QFG1's going on my list.

Far as I know, the Subsistance/HD Collection releases are really the way to go there. The original EU version of MSX Metal Gear had conversion stuff cut down, and there was no official English release for 2 prior to the Subsistence one.
Either probably benefits from using a FAQ, at least for a few key things - MG2 you basically have to, since it referenced the manual for copy protection reasons. Konami put the codec numbers you'd need to find on their site, though some of the puzzles are also pretty odd/obscure.
Still, MG2 (particularly) is well worth firing up if you like MGS, as it's pretty close to that game in 2D.

I may very well beat Final Fantasy Adventure before the end of the month; so, I may have to drop it off my Summer Gaming Challenge list. 
I am thinking of replacing it with a sports game. My options are:
Baseball Simulator 1.000
Baseball Stars
Decathlete
Double Dribble
Hot Shots Golf 2
RBI Baseball
Super Baseball 2020
Tecmo Bowl/Tecmo Super Bowl
Thoughts? (Since it is the summer, I am inclined to play a baseball or golf game...)
