I am the kind of man that likes a good ol' explicitly violent action flick at times. Hell, I even enjoyed the first few Saw films.

But I cannot watch the video clip of this incident. I honestly, truly cannot, without feeling sick and disturbed.

Yeah, I draw the line between fake and reality myself pretty strongly. Violent entertainment is pretty much nothing to me, but this? Frankly I'm not even going to touch the video, the thought and descriptions of it is disturbing enough to me. Disgusting.

Why do people think it is so great to lack sympathy for others? Seriously, not just in this thread, but in a lot of other areas on and off racketboy, I keep hearing people take this tough guy attitude that because people's lives could always be worse, they should never complain about anything ever. It seems to always pop up in any conversation that challenges the status quo. It's like the slightest mention that the world could possibly be a better place is taken as a personal affront and is met with a defensive "You get what you deserve! Shut the fuck up and stop being a whiny little bitch. You think life is hard? I'll show you hard. You want something to cry about? I'll give you something to cry about." This is such a highly counterproductive attitude. The world COULD become a better place in so many areas, but the slightest rock of the boat and out comes the whip. "Shut up liberal whiner! Bleeding heart pussy! Coddled baby! Everything is fine. EVERYTHING IS JUST FINE!"

Straw man fallacy. At no point did I tell you or anyone else to "shut the fuck up." I did not call you or anyone else a liberal, a pussy, a baby, or any other such name.

Rather, I made a logical argument backed up by evidence including Texas legal code and reports on child abuse rates. I have rejected emotional appeals and built my argument simply on individualism.

Seriously, I'm just so shocked that I even have to defend myself when I say something like "child abuse is wrong".

Here is the root of your straw man fallacy. You are misrepresenting my argument. I am not arguing that child abuse is right; I am arguing that belting one's child is legal in Texas. I am not making a moral argument; I am making a legal argument.

Obviously, any kind of violence is wrong. The law is another matter altogether.

That post is only in part directed at you samsonlonghair. I was responding to your specific comment where you said "I lack sympathy for everyone who claims their lives were ruined by abuse." The rest of my post is comenting on a general type of attitude that I see throughout the internet, of which that comment is but one example of. I've been following this story in a couple of different places and I'm just amazed at how many people are willing to defend this father's actions.

I'm glad you can see the distinction between the morality and the legality of violence though.
