Ya dig?

Amiga was infamous for its graphic design, and Atari ST for its MIDI and music stuff. But both seem to have some pretty fascinating game ports.

I've gotten into Amiga a lot in the last few years after reading The Future Is Here and subsequently purchasing the officially licensed Forever Amiga emu. Just exploring all the freeware and demo scene stuff has been impressive.

There's certainly plenty of cases where games look better on an Amiga, but I wonder how well the gameplay translates. Like I seem to remember hearing UP being used for jump a lot, which is...yeah.

you do encounter that. Though lots of games (like Bonk) had an option to use a one- or two-button controller. If you switched to 2-button then you used the second button for jump rather than up.

I don't know. I grew up loving lots of DOS ports of games (like Ninja Turtles for example, or Tetris). Admittedly, many of these were horribly flawed. But to me they were awesome at the time. So I think I just have a fascination with that era of 8-bit/16-bit games on computers. I find myself drawn to exploring the Amiga/ST stuff that I missed out on at that time, but it gives me the same sort of feeling as all those old DOS games I did play.

Plus I just think disks are cooler that cartridges. 8)

I never could figure out why Bonk 1 looks so bad when compared to Bonk 2 and 3, which are on the same hardware but look like that Amiga screenshot you have O.o
Granted the controls take some getting used to, I loves dose games :3

It's probably for the same reason that Super Mario Bros. looks so different than SMB3. Programmers just got more familiar with the hardware over time and figured out how to get the most out of the hardware.

Lemmings when you nuke them all. So cool to hear the voices in the original 1st released Amiga version.

The Amiga has some of the best versions of many computer games of the era, being the original hardware for Monkey Island, Lemmings, Worms and so on. It also had good PC ports, though they tend to have mushier controls than average.

It is true, though, that many well-known Amiga games were terrible in every regard except music and graphics (Eg. Shadow of the Beast). But generally, all European action games were no matter if they were platformers or shmups. Stuff like Superfrog or Robocod cannot compete against third-rate Japanese games. I know it's controversial and inflamatory for some, but it's the truth.

That said, just yesterday a small group released a remake of La Abadía del Crimen (Crime's Abbey) which is considered one of the best, if not the best game of the "Golden Era of Spanish software". It's sort of a "point and click adventure" without the point'n click and is, by all means, an unofficial video game of the novel The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco. I don't know if it will be great, I'm sceptic but it's incredibly advanced by 1987 standards so it might actually be!

I'm fast coming up to 1000 games on my backloggery. I'm now at 992, with 2 more in the post. I figure I'll track my games up to the big 1000. One of the 992 is a game I actually no longer own (Luigi's Mansion) so I need to reacquire that one. For number 1000 I plan to celebrate with a big purchase of some sort.

#988: Soleil (Mega Drive)
#989: New Adventure Island (PC Engine)
#990: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (Playstation)
#991: Pokkén Tournament (Wii U)
#992: IA/VT Colorful (Vita)
and soon to arrive:
#993: R-Type (Master System)
#994: Quartet (Master System)

I'm off to a retro game market here in London on Sunday, so I'm going to have to be careful to try and limit myself to 5 games max so that I don't hit 1000 too early

No, no, it's a Windows remake of a 1987 Amstrad game that was later ported to other platforms.

Here's a screenshot comparison. I cannot upload the picture because it's too big:

Sadly, as far as I know neither the original nor the remake have English translations.
