Kaiji is classic. Still need to watch season 2.

Honestly, restricted rock, paper, scissors is still my favorite arc that I've seen.

Dude never stops crying. Always getting screwed over.

Restricted Rock Paper Scissors was the strongest arc of season 1, but I enjoyed them all.

I haven't finished Season 2 yet, but the first arc is pretty good in that one too. He's done a lot less crying so far. Honestly I started watching just to see if
he managed to get his fingers sewn back on

Kaiji is one of the reasons that Madhouse is my favorite animation studio. They do a lot of great more mature series than most others. Although recently their TV lineup has been pretty week outside of Chihayafuru. But they have Ippo season 3 and Ace of Diamond coming up. We'll see how those go. Shaft is a not far off second, I think.

After that maybe CoMix Wave. I'd have to think about it.

Ippo is a big one too. And Rainbow was awesome.

I can't get behind the Shaft fever though, but I can admit I haven't seen too much and a lot of their stuff seems to have a crazy contrast between each show. Maybe there's some I haven't seen yet that'd work for me. I liked Arakawa but so far I'm not loving Shinbou's style and it looks like he directs most of Shaft's stuff, lol.

Have you seen Soul Taker? That was one of his earlier directed shows and yikes. Talk about a mess.

Have you guys read Liar Game or seen the drama? I'm watching it now and it's pretty amazing, totally feels like something the Kaiji guy would come up with. Madhouse would be perfect to adapt it.

Just finished the new DBZ movie myself and man, completely loved it. It goes back to DB a lot and everything, so if you're a fan of the whole thing it's amazing. Toriyama was heavily involved this time around from what I know and there were a few slaps to GT there, which everyone knows by now is not canon. But this was amazing and definitely the next big step after the Buu arc. It could end here or not, who knows. But it'd be a great sendoff for infinite possibilities and ideas if they don't do anymore.

Also hit up the first Eva Rebuild, great stuff. I might even prefer this to the earlier stuff in the series, since it's shorter and higher budget. But it goes without saying that the first half of Eva isn't what makes it stand out the most. So I'm a lot more excited to get to the other movies.

I also finished up Mouretsu Pirates and thought it was pretty bad. Went in thinking and hearing it was the second coming of Nadesico (same director), but wow not even close. It has a strong beginning, but then the plot just does absolutely nothing and you almost never see an opposing force, so it's just this insanely weird sci-fi space drama about a school club that dresses up as pirates to do semi-legal help and talk about insurance and stuff. Ehhhhhh...

Just watched Dragonball Z Battle of the Gods (14th movie). Pretty good, but not the best. Leaves it open for more movies to be made though. If you're a DBZ fan, you'll enjoy it. If you're not, you probably won't.

Indeed. I enjoyed the series, but it isn't very good. I mainly just liked some of the characters. It was pretty disjointed though. Story arcs didn't really flow. Not much really happened most of the time.

A lot of people seem to say the second season of Kaiji isn't as good, but I thought it was right on the same level by the end. I enjoyed both seasons equally, definitely one of my favorite modern series. My favorite part of the whole thing was probably E Card, although it's all a pretty close call.

I've also seen most people claim you don't need to be a Mahjong wizard to enjoy Akagi (or know anything about it at all), and that it's really good as well. I quite like Mahjong myself though, so I won't be surprised if I actually enjoy it more than Kaiji.

I didn't like the few episodes I've seen of Akagi because I understand how Mahjong works at all. And because Akagi seemed a lot less likable as a character. He is just a natural and not relatable. At least for me. Maybe he gets better later.

I guess I was imagining it would be kind of like how a person that doesn't know the rules of football in detail could still become excited by a big play by picking up on reaction cues. You'll enjoy it more if you understand the game, but it could be entertaining either way and the character reactions and stuff should keep the viewer in the loop.

As for the character Akagi, I had gathered he was more of a character that knew what he was doing and had confidence. More like Lelouch dominating chess games than Kaiji getting screwed over constantly and losing about as much as he wins if you will.
