yeah I've been following the case closely, it is fascinating on several levels.

Here's the proposed kickass monument:

Nah, they can fit 4K movies onto Blu-Ray discs. They've already released Robocop in that format. There's no need to buy a new player, especially since Blu-Ray still hasn't fully replaced DVD.

It appears that 4k video can be provided using the existing h264 codec at about three times the file size. The newer h265 codec will allow 4k video at only double the file size. I know very little about bluray. Can the players be updated with h265 support? I suspect not.

I think the ones we've seen so far are mostly saying they were made from 4K masters, but still 1080p on the disc (Robocop, Ghostbusters, etc). AFAIK, they're looking at a triple-layer 100GB Blu-ray to standardize 4K releases onto.

Updating to play the new standard may come down to the player. I imagine some will be able to be.

I do think we'll wind up seeing something more like that though. Including a 4K copy with a regular release. Especially with all the combo releases already out there, and 4K streaming popping up. It's not in their better interests to have it be a niche format like digital VHS or whatnot. Not if they expect to move 4K TVs.

So have I, and I gotta say, that is a really snazzy monument. But it's the New York Satanic Temple that is trying to install the statue, so if by some means they don't get it, they can always try for their home state. They're also currently in the process of adopting a highway in New Jersey I believe.

Also, Oklahoma is NOT the South.

 @ the Oklahoma comment.

I don't really see it going through in Oklahoma, but they can do what they want I guess. I just feel it would be a bit tacky in placement, as I've heard that, supposedly, its in response to the Ten Commandments monument, and it seems somewhat intentionally offensive, although I might be completely wrong. I do think it would give a nice contrast, nonetheless.

What'll most likely happen is that they'll take down the 10 commandments statue. I can almost guarantee they won't allow them to build the statue and it'll end up in court.

That's kind of the point. Some would find the Ten Commandments monument intentionally offensive, as its placement suggests a state-endorsement of a particular religion. It suggests "Woe to the atheist, hindu, satanist, etc. that crosses the state of Oklahoma, we endorse only the Judeo-Christian god."

If they don't accept monuments from other religions as well, then they have pretty much violated most understandings of what the legal separation of church and state means.

IMO, they should just remove the monument rather than have it be a lightning rod for efforts like this. Seems like a waste of tax payer resources to fight or endorse new monuments.
