The premise of this movie just doesnt do much for me. It may end up better than it seems, but I won't go to the theatre for it. Maybe it will be one of those pleasant surprises.
GRAVITY was made to be a theatrical experience, best viewed in IMAX 3D. I'm seeing it tomorrow morning, as I'm hoping for an empty theater. I'm sure I will not be disappointed.

I haven't been to an IMAX in forever. Honestly, home theater set ups aren't much of a step down from big theatres now. It is more of a question of if I want to watch the movie early or wait.

It truly depends on the movie. LIFE OF PI lost a lot by not being in 3D and on a HUGE screen. Some movies simply beg for the big screen. Even my home theater with a digital projector and dolby surround doesn't do JURASSIC PARK justice.

I have yet to find 3D to really enhance a movie. It is more of a sideshow or distraction.
An IMAX is a unique setup that can't be recreated, but standard theaters I find aren't much of a difference. I only go to the local Alamo Drafthouse anyway. I won't go to the normal theaters with people crammed in, talking, kids etc...
The Drafthouse makes it tolerable because they serve me good beer and food and have strict no talking policies.

The only movie I can think of where 3D really added something is CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS. It didn't seem gimmicky or forced. But I think the dark atmosphere of GRAVITY may work well with 3D, so I'll pay the extra few bucks.

For me the choice of 3D has largely become about the intent of the film maker as to whether or not they filmed the movie in 3D/with 3D in mind. For Gravity, all signs point to it being a decision by the creative folks, not the suits.

The director of GRAVITY publicly stated something close to "Screw 3D movies, because they aren't made with 3D in mind. It's used to boost box office sales and is an afterthought. Very few 3D movies are made with 3D in mind. This movie had 3D in mind since day one and it shows".

Yup. I always opt for 2D for the reason he mentioned unless I hear something like this as pertains to a particular film. It's rare, but they tend to be the only movies worth a hoot in 3D in that they don't feel gimmicky and like an afterthought.

What I hate is when people use 3D to tout box office sales. Yeah it made more money, because the tickets are almost twice as expensive.
Even though it never works, I sill bring my own glasses and say, "I don't need the glasses fee, I brought my own". If I wasn't an honest duder, I'd bring my glasses, pay for a 2D ticket and jump screens.

It would be nice if we just got straight-up "number of tickets sold" as opposed to just raw dollars. I would be a nice metric to compare the performances of movies past and present, without having to account for stuff like ticket pricing changes, inflation, etc. I guess investors don't really care about that sort of thing though.
