It might not be a compilation but just don't take a look at the Sega Ages series in Japan. There are some cool releases though. Ok, maybe take a look. :p

I know the Sega Classics Collection was the US release for some of the Sega Ages games. However, it contains only a handful of what was available (9 out of 30+).

Besides "Hover and shoot" this is my other strategy.

Devil May Cry 2 (HD Collection)

5 clears, all modes beaten, beaten with all characters. Couldn't be arsed to get the platinum trophy. The remaining trophies are mostly simple whatever trophies, but at this point I just want to be done with this game and never return. I've always defended this game and at very least been tolerant of it, but going into it directly after spending a considerable amount of time with the first game made, the mountain of flaws stick out more than ever.

I could probably write a ton about how I feel about this game and how massively inferior it is to every other game in the series, but I'll try to keep it to the point. The first offender is the gameplay. Not only did the developers of this game ignore the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" rule, they decided to go with the "if it's not broken, get yourself a crowbar and start swinging" rule. Dante is slow and sluggish and the roll maneuver does not feel evasive and smooth as it should. It's almost like you are moving around underwater the entire game or like you're on some high gravity planet (maybe you are), the controls just feel very noticeably off, which is a big no-no for these games. Why they would slow the entire flow of a game known for fast paced combat is beyond me.

That leads me to how the weapons were handled. Did you think it was awesome having two distinct movesets in the first game? Well, too bad. Now you're limited to just the sword moveset, and on top of that, half of the moves for the sword are gone, including the unique devil trigger moves. No time sensitive combos either, instead every combo is simply mashing the attack button and moving the analog stick after a certain swing number to change the button mashing string. I've never seen this in any other game, and it is an unintuitive and silly as it sounds. The illusion of having multiple weapons is given by having a few "alternate swords" you can collect that simply change the speed of the swing and the look of the sword. Since the game is stupidly easy, all you ever do is just wind up picking the strongest sword so you can get the mind numbing battles over more quickly, which in turn makes the sluggish slo-mo combat even more boring and unrewarding.

The game is piss easy. Every boss can be defeated by mindless mashing and devil trigger spam. That is every boss battle, even on Dante Must Die mode. This is inexcusable and hugely disappointing. The game is virtually the same exact experience on Dante Must Die mode (assuming you have maxed your health and such) that it is on Normal mode. It's not like the other games where everything is changed up, new enemy positions, bosses are insane, it's just the same exact game but everything has more health. Oh, and the enemies devil trigger. But it doesn't do anything but make them immune to stun, they are still disposed of just as easily. The awesome feeling of reward that makes mastering the combat so fun is not there. Even for players that aren't that good, the game throws more orbs at you than you know what to do with, making item spam a way too viable option. There is no incentive to get good or use any tactics.

The visuals. Like the sweet gothic and Resident Evil look from the first game? I hope not, because all you're going to get in this game is empty rooms devoid of any style or thought and ugly sand colored buildings. Not a single environment sticks out as cool looking or memorable. It is lazy looking and has zero flair. To me this is a pretty big part of the DMC games, I loved how imaginative and crazy looking a lot of the areas in the first and third games were. There is barely anything to say other than the environment designs are as boring as it gets.

No secret missions (they are now just "rooms" where you fight a few enemies). No unlockable moves(!). The story transcends so bad it's good and is just a mess of incoherent dialogue and random characters. The famous in-game ranking system is lifeless and unexciting, as you can get S by spamming guns and moves (which undermines the point of the entire system). Just looking at the boss designs is boring, fighting them is worse. etc

There is little to say about Lucia mode, the "alternate scenario" or whatever. It's just a cobbled together string of stages copy pasted from Dante's scenario with underwater levels. That's entire levels underwater, that control even worse and slower than the game already does, complete with a frustrating boss fight. Yeah.

tl;dr it sucks

^ ok, maybe you are right that 4 is better. DMC2 is far from fresh in my mind, I just remember thinking it was unfairly slogged back in the day, and that while it was a poor DMC game, it wasn't a poor game in the grander scheme.

DMC4 is the one that's unfairly slogged, too this day I guess. I seriously feel like I'm one of the only fans and I have no idea why. I know the competition isn't steep with Japanese action games being thinner this gen, so not to discredit it either, but it's probably my favorite action game this gen next to Metal Gear Rising or something. But DMC4 is even deeper. Nero was different enough from Dante to change things up a bit, cool bosses that were done well even when they were huge in scale, and yeah. The game is amazing, beat it on every difficulty, beat Blood Palace, etc, I got obsessed with it. Maybe up in the air against the others for fans, but to consider it lower than B grade or something definitely makes my head spin. Combat doesn't get much more intricate and if we think of other sequels... man it blows Ninja Gaiden 2 (Xbox/360) away for me, and NG3 sounded like it completely sucked (DMC2 level? lol). And I wouldn't even hesitate to put it above God of War, etc.

... also to just put it out on the table, I know there's a crap ton of backtracking throughout the entire game practically, but let's not kid ourselves. That's definitely in DMC1 and DMC3 as well and pretty much Japanese game design in general, definitely Capcom's stuff for sure. People with those complaints must loathe Metroidvania's and such? lol.

Granted it was the first DMC I completely beat and playing the heck out of so there might be some nostalgia/bias... buuuuuuut nah, it's badass and I can't wait to replay it after I put the HD collection to rest.

Gameplay wise definitely more consistent with the series itself than RE4 was to RE (but hey I love RE4, haha).

On that note I thought about it today, but I still really hope they reboot RE. I actually want that to happen and might be disgusted if they don't, on the other hand I still don't have any interest in DmC. It didn't take me long to figure out the difference here... DMC had very strong personality/character, Dante was very if not even moreso established as a character/persona than anyone in the RE series, and yeah. RE on the other hand I love the death, but beyond liking Jill a bit and the Leon/Ada fever, it's never been anything I've thought much about when it comes to characters. Wesker was good, but then RE5 happened. And cue more reasons I want a reboot since they've kind of just ruined a lot of stuff and with all the characters and gameplay style changes and new viruses and and and it's just way too damn cluttered and convoluted beyond repair at this point.

I beat Cool Spot on the Genesis. I never beat games haha. Ironic though because once I saw the credits I realized I did in fact beat this one back in the day as a kid. Repetitive levels, but a solid platformer that I think is becoming less and less underrated.

I've also always defended this one, even though I agree it's the worst in the series. I have the HD collection but haven't dove in yet, so my only play through of DMC2 remains to be back when it came out.

You're not the only one. I loved DMC4.

LOL Loved this post. Thanks for the honest review.

Devil May Cry was always a series that I wanted to get into. I never played the originals (nor the reboot) but I wanted to get to them at some point.

Although with the HD releases on the PS3, I'd have to go for the plat and it sounds like a pain (and in the case of DMC 2, a chore...)

Great game. It was the perfect length and challenge. There were a few "what the hell?" moments due to the controls, but otherwise very enjoyable. Whenever Kingsley would get a new weapon or armor, I actually felt like I was on an adventure and getting stronger.
