I think I will eventually consider Open Range to be a classic.Ack wrote:I agree with this. I have trouble considering Pale Rider a "classic," and it was released in 1985. The only post-1979 Western I can think of that I would consider close to a classic would have to be Unforgiven (though I suppose an argument could easily be made for Dances with Wolves and possibly Tombstone).
What was the last movie you've seen?

All this talk about modern westerns, and nobody mentions Young Guns? For shame.

3:10 to Yuma
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
...two classic westerns from 2007!
(For the record, I also consider 1979 the cut-off year for true classic westerns.)

Yuma is a remake, although I'm not really fond of either.prfsnl_gmr wrote:3:10 to Yuma

Getting past the 70's there's less westerns in general, and just as many fewer good ones. I think Tombstone could be considered a modern classic. I would not consider Pale Rider one, as it reminds me of a modified High Plains Drifter in many ways, and I'd rather watch High Plains Drifter.

Last two movies I saw were Pacific Rim in the cinema and Hot Fuzz on DVD. And I used to love watching westerns.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I'd say "classic" Westerns ended at the end of the 1960s, specifically with The Wild Bunch announcing their telos.
That's not to say that there weren't Westerns later that riffed on classic motifs in interesting ways, but the classic period from roughly 1939 (Stagecoach) to 1969 (Wild Bunch) is where Westerns had their "classic" period or "golden age", if you will.

New RoboCop Remake Trailer:

Looks awesome! I'm gonna be seeing this one. The original is one of my favorites.
"Dead or alive, you're coming with me."
Sorry about the poor video quality, I didn't see any better on YouTube.

Is it just me, or does the suit in the trailer look much better than the suit in the images we'd seen several months back?

Actually, I thought they should have left the suit before the adding the black (in the trailer). It looked more like the original.MrPopo wrote:Is it just me, or does the suit in the trailer look much better than the suit in the images we'd seen several months back?
