What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Dredd.

Not bad. They packed in bit too much of the slow-mo drug effect at the beginning, and then it disappeared for a long time. Film was more violent than expected (appreciated). The downer was that there was a "heart bomb" in it. If there is a more cliche low-budget steven seagal type plot device, I would have welcomed it.

It actually makes a lot of sense. They don't see people on Earth as people. They have to both make them want to be on Elysium as well as keep them off. You can't make EVERYONE want to be their if you give away your greatest asset. They don't want coexistence. They want sub-servitude. It was a rare situation that the CEO was even on Earth. Normally everything is carried out by robots. There's a lot of instances that look a lot like, these people are worth less than nothing to us, sort of behavior ... so the idea of giving them free medical care likely never even crossed their minds.

There's a lot of parallels to immigration talks, but I don't think it's specific to now. They've always sounded like this.

An allegory for Obamacare is a bit of a stretch.
Universal Healthcare, on the other hand (which is something that's been sought for decades) is much more realistic.
Neil Blomkamp still has the same problems as a filmmaker, but it's still rather classic Sci-Fi modernized, which is pretty cool. We really haven't seen original stuff like this or District 9 since the 70s.
Yeah I was using "Obamacare" but I was meaning universal healthcare.

I agree that it's great to see this kind of sci-fi on the big screen. I enjoyed myself I was just a bit disappointed.

I'm not sure I buy the whole, "not seeing them as humans" thing though. Some of them went that far yes, but the president of Elysium for instance seemed pretty pissed off that they were blowing up civilians at the beginning. He seemed wary of a scandal coming out of it and that implies somebody must care.

I might be overly critical here but it bothered me.

My thoughts on the last few pages:

Ds, I don't consider 2000 to be part of the 2000s, but I tend to go by a 1-10 system as opposed to 0-9. But if I did, Requiem for a Dream was an incredible film that heartily deserves the praise it gets. I just never want to watch it again.

I love Miike's work. In my opinion, the worst part of Audition is how much it drags towards the inevitable conclusion. Yes, its torture sequences are disturbing (though there are considerably worse films out there), but I look at it as more a film on the inability to tell what dark desires lie within the hearts of others and less just torture porn. I prefer Ichi the Killer, but it is far more comical in its ridiculous violence.

As for that list of films from the 2000s. That list is...well... Where is Hotel Rwanda? Ip Man? Downfall? Synecdoche, New York? The Lives of Others? Amelie? Or if considering films from 2000, O Brother, Where Art Thou?

And Kill Bill really wasn't that good.

wait, what? So you would say that 1990 was not part of the 90's?

You're a mess.
First of all, yes. I realize that can seem pretty strange, but having spent so long going between 1-10 for things, switching back just seems odd.

Second of all, if Uma Thurman knew how to use that sword she's holding, I might feel differently, but all I can see is a white girl swinging a hunk of sharp metal like it's a baseball bat. And I think Tarantino's best was Reservoir Dogs.

I have to say that Kill Bill Volume 1 is pretty...meh, but I do feel that Volume 2 is a great leap forward in comparison stylistically and musically.

I still do feel that Resevoir Dogs is his best also. It was so simple and gave focus on what he does best, dialog. I always feel like if you give him less to work with he shines so much better.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all his films and his writing style is very entertaining, but yeah man...Kill Bill Volume 1 is his weakest.

Seeing it in a theater with speakers blaring changes a lot of the presentation of the movie.

I don't think it's swifter than an eephus pitch come dialogue, but on the big screen the vision and story of the film is amazing and worth applauding. Kind of blows your mind.

Here's another voice for not caring for Kill Bill either 1 or 2.
