What was the last movie you've seen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Well that was unexpected.

two of my wife's favorite movies, so I asked her. (She's also really into pairing movies with food). She said Lost Boys goes with Chinese food. You're eating maggots, Luke.

Why? Miike turns my stomach.

I do dever most, but his make me want to upchuck, haha.

I'm exagerating. The only film to make me physically sick was not a Miike. (Suicide Club).

Dredd

I just noticed it was added to Netflix instant last night so I pretty much stopped whatever I was doing and watched it start to finish. I had been meaning to see this movie ever since it was in theaters due to strong recommendations from friends I trust, and the day I was suppose to see it in 3D I accidentally got suckered into a seasonal job at FYE.

After watching the movie I can safely say that job at FYE was a big mistake and I am very regretful I didn't get to see this in the theaters. I didn't really have a whole lot of expectations but wow, this was one of the best action movies I've seen in a while. There was really no reason for the cinematography to have been as great as it was, I can't imagine how awesome some of the gunplay scenes would've looked in 3d. I don't really buy movies anymore that often (the last one I picked up was the newest Blade Runner bluray) but I'm definitely gonna be going out of my way to pick this one up real soon. Highly recommend if you're a Netflix user!

Check out RAID THE REDEMPTION if you haven't seen it yet.

THE LOST BOYS

Sorry noise, apparently I had a Corey itch that needed scratching.

Mel Gibson has definitely been on a cycle:

I watched Gangster Squad last night. It starts out really interesting and a bit different, but quickly falls into formula. It was alright overall, but a little disappointing.

Saw Elysium but I'm not sure how I ultimately feel about it. There were a lot of cool little things and like in District 9 he knows how to fashion neat sci-fi weaponry but the film itself kind of fell flat. The guy from District 9 who played Kruger was hilarious but I could've done without all of the generically evil character traits thrown in.

The thing that bothered me the most:
Why not just let everyone have access to the super-duper medical technology? I get that this was a ham-fisted Obamacare metaphor but come on movie, at least give me some bullshit excuse for why they don't just send out the space ambulances like they did at the end to keep earthlings from crashing their pad.

You could at least tell me that the resources that power the pods are extremely limited or something and they're hording them out of greed for themselves. That would've been good enough to suspend my disbelief on that bit.

I also kept thinking I would be enjoying it more if it were a video game instead of a movie.

But I guess if that's the case then it would be a broken Aesop since they would've squandered all of those resources in one go.
I guess I didn't hate it but it's a lot more forgettable than District 9.

Elysium
It actually makes a lot of sense. They don't see people on Earth as people. They have to both make them want to be on Elysium as well as keep them off. You can't make EVERYONE want to be their if you give away your greatest asset. They don't want coexistence. They want sub-servitude. It was a rare situation that the CEO was even on Earth. Normally everything is carried out by robots. There's a lot of instances that look a lot like, these people are worth less than nothing to us, sort of behavior ... so the idea of giving them free medical care likely never even crossed their minds.

There's a lot of parallels to immigration talks, but I don't think it's specific to now. They've always sounded like this.

An allegory for Obamacare is a bit of a stretch.
Universal Healthcare, on the other hand (which is something that's been sought for decades) is much more realistic.
Neil Blomkamp still has the same problems as a filmmaker, but it's still rather classic Sci-Fi modernized, which is pretty cool. We really haven't seen original stuff like this or District 9 since the 70s.
