Of course there are some inherent issues with it, naturally. The second-hand market would disappear, which would be an enormous annoyance.
You can also say goodbye to trying to get into anything more than one generation old if we go digital-only. It would also severely cheapen special edition games. Oh boy, a costume. Woopdie-fucking-doo. Give me my damn Nep-Nep plush instead!

PC gaming also has the benefit of massive retrocompatibility though guys (x86). If nearly every console and handheld ever made also ran off a common architecture, then we'd be making a proper analog here.

Digital is fine as long as there's a way to back up your digital purchases independently, as well as being able to play them offline*. Otherwise all the ownership is in the hands of the publisher, and none of it is in the hands of the consumer.

*If game X is not an online oriented game of course.

Lol that's insane. Surely more retro gaming goes on digitally than with physical media.

So, it's pretty much resource collecting to make better equipment, which is then used to fight boss battles? That might be up my alley.
Yep pretty much, all in a mining sandbox which lets you build some pretty cool stuff if you so wish.

I'm talking about legitimate gaming, not emulators. The percentage of the NES's library that can legitimately be acquired digitally today is infinitesimal.

I turned on ESPN and the X-Games were on while eating breakfast this morning; and saw competitive Halo 5 and that was all sorts of weird.

Yeah, the lack of a shared architecture across platforms hurts console gaming continuity. The PC's big recent-ish transition was shifting from 32-bit to 64-bit, and that is pretty much accounted for at a hardware level. And for much older stuff, DOSBox is a godsend.
