Well, with the Doom 3 version you get...Doom 3, which may or may not interest you. But you apparently lose the ability to access the command line in Doom 2 and Ultimate Doom.

Here's some info to help you make your decision:

Whatever you buy, play them in a source port.

Glad my Doom suggestion worked.

As much as I love Doom, I've never played through Doom 64. After learning about EX, I've been debating which version my first play through should be...
It's more Doom 3 than Doom 3 itself, and I like Doom 3. But Doom 64 is a nice facelift from the originals and instead of the rocking metal inspired soundtracks, has really dark ambient soundscapes that are pretty cool. Most of the game is in hell as usual, which is kind of disappointing since I love the space levels, but yeah it's a damn good game and can get pretty challenging. Definitely tougher than vanilla Doom.

I originally played Doom Absolution years ago, the first PC port and it was pretty good. But EX was amazing and ran like butter. It really feels like a PC game. EX even supports controller support, so I was playing it on my TV. Couldn't get it to fullscreen on my TV/second monitor, but blowing up the resolution got the job done. I've never had any interest in playing the 64 version, I imagine strafing/etc is a bit clunkier and going with EX running the game on high resolutions, it looks top notch if you're into the pseudo 2D/3D look.

ie: If you enjoy Doom 1-2 at all, jump on 64/EX now.

It was over too quickly another time around for me. Would be cool to get some megawads using the 64 assets.

To put it in perspective, you're getting probably 80 more levels with the Classic Collection. Doom 2 Master Levels + Final Doom (don't forget it's Plutonia and TNT, both completely separate episodes), and then the shorter No Rest for the Living. It's like... 21+32+32+8 or something.

I'm a big fan of ZDoom and the source ports myself, so the better question is if you want to easily play on the TV with a controller or not. I think the Classic Collection was great and played well with the PS3 controller. I'm cool with playing vanilla Doom with all the ports out there and kind of want to start collecting them haha, but when it comes to fanmade megawads and episodes that's when I jump on ZDoom.

People seem to love it, but I like my Doom AUTHENTIC! I can't bring myself to play it any other way because it's already perfect. 8)

Basically the only thing I do with source ports is tax out the resolution. Nothing too fancy.

I tend to keep my Doom as vanilla as possible as well when I'm in the mood for some old-school Doom, but Brutal Doom is its own special butterfly that I greatly appreciate.

The new campaign they came out with for it is pretty nice if you can't get over playing the original levels with the mod.

RIP AND TEAR!
