I've been out a while. I saw a couple of movies. Some I had seen before. The Wolverine. Pacific Rim. Drive. Labyrinth. L.A. Confidential. The Man Who Shot Libery Valance. Peeping Tom.

Now on to all the crap you guys are talking about:

Luke, the Les Mis accents did not bother me. If they wanted to be accurate to the time/setting, they would get French actors speaking/singing in French. Now, should I be lowering my expectations of CBGB or Elysium, because I wasn't planning to watch Elysium anyway.

As for The Lone Ranger, I watched episodes on VHS when I was a child. I had no interest in seeing three hours of Johnny Depp as Tonto, nor do I have any interest in seeing a beloved character from my childhood done the same treatment that has been done to Underdog, the Three Stooges, Alvin and the Chipmunks, etc.

As for The Wolverine, it was better than I had anticipated (I really hadn't expected much), so I found myself enjoying it. I saw the film as just a bridge for Marvel to show off what has happened to their star character while setting up for next year's X-Men movie, but it was effective and helped cleanse the bad taste that X3 left in my mouth.

Brazil...I haven't watched it since college. I think it's an excellent film, but I always found its mix of cartoonish wackiness and its bleak and dismal dystopia an odd mix. I prefer other works of Gilliam as well, though I guess based on Ds' choices that I much prefer his flights of pure fantasy while he prefers his more "realistic" endeavors, because I'd argue The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is my favorite of his work. That said, I have an odd relationship with The Fisher King where I seem to completely forget about it and then recall it utterly out of the blue, usually because something makes me think of the Red Knight.

This movie ... is lacking a lot of that. And I'm just tired of those kinds of movies.
Again: comic book movies suck.

It's very, very far and few between that you'll find comic book films that do all those things you are looking for. I've argued many times in this thread that comic book films have only gotten more rote in the past 5-6 years or so, and I think The Wolverine is at least a better example of these "by-the-numbers" films (especially the Marvel universe stuff. Ugh.).
I don't hate comic book movies (obviously), but the comics are almost always better with deeper stories, more emotional impact, and far more fleshed-out characters.

The accents weren't a huge gripe for me, more of a distraction. And even in a musical, that little kid was too much for me.

Lower your expectations for ELYSIUM. It's not bad by any stretch, but don't expect another sleeper hit like DISTRICT 9. And since you aren't going to see it:
Matt Damon's character is human after all. Lame.
Agreed on The Lone Ranger. They marketed that movie so poorly they should be ashamed. The way Disney has been handling nearly everything makes me nervous about the new Star Wars franchise.

Accents are always a distraction for me, and I think that their use is a bit non-sensical in most movies. For example, in The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) - which is otherwise a very good movie - all of the characters are Czech and all of them speak English with a heavy accent. This makes no sense to me. First, if the characters are Czech, then they would speak Czech rather than English. Second, if all of the characters are speaking English so that we, the audience, can understand them, then why are they speaking it with a heavy accent? Certainly, two Czechs speaking to each other would not perceive an Eastern European accent during a conversation in their native language. Accordingly, the accent serves only to remind us of the film's setting and the nationality of its characters. This reminder is entirely unnecessary, and it alienates the audience from the characters to a certain extent.

One problem is movies with subtitles turn off a lot of people. I've heard: "I might as well be reading a book" before. Usually those people also don't like B&W movies (and I don't like those people).

You can't please everyone, but I do like when a movie begins in one language and transitions into English for the audience.

I understand...however, I very much doubt that people who cannot tolerate subtitles would be watching The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

I personally try and get dubbed movies over subtitled if I can. I just prefer it, because I either get distracted by the subtitles and miss action, or read them so fast they aggravate me by being at the bottom of the screen.

And despite how others feel, I love horrible dubbing.
