Shinobi. But only because I've only ever played one Ninja Gaiden game, whereas I've played a ton of Shinobi games and they were generally all good.

But the NES Ninja Gaiden is waaaay better than the original Shinobi is.

Ninja Gaiden. If we're allowed to include the modern-day reboot, then NG gets it in a landslide. It's a bit tighter if we just use the original series. I think the original Shinobi is pretty good, but for some reason, I like the beat-'em-up arcade game a bit more of Ninja Gaiden, and Ninja Gaiden III is probably my favorite over all of them. The super sword is awesome stuff, the wall and ceiling hang moves are cool, and it's a graphical masterpiece for the NES.

If there's any game that comes close to bringing Shinobi out on top, it's Shinobi III. It plays really, really well... but I think I've only beaten it once. And Revenge just doesn't work for me. Ninja Gaiden II is probably the weak link of the NES series for me, but it's still really, really good.

So yeah, I'm going to say Ninja Gaiden, regardless.

As far as the 2D entries go...

Shinobi > Ninja Gaiden

From my personal enjoyment with both series.

I recognized ask the games on the left (immediately sorted RKA), but there were a couple I didn't recognize on the right and most of the Game Boy games were too blurry for me to make out.

I'm gonna go with Ninja Gaiden, but that's mostly because I'm more familiar with it. I've never played the recent ones, but the ones for NES are amazing.

Shinobi was an arcade series at heart and made it onto the home consoles keeping the same action (Shadow Dancer, Return of Shinobi, Shinobi III). I still enjoy tearing through the first one. (home ports sucked, however)

NG started in the arcade, but even that was an unplayable mess. If those NES games weren't so damn cheap.....

The buttons on my GCW Zero are covered in gunk and they weren't great in the first place so my console is practically unusable right now. I can clean them, but only by taking out the whole thing, including the battery and the screen and I fear breaking it.

my own take is I think overall I'd lean towards Shinobi.

I enjoyed Ninja Gaiden trilogy on NES. But that's kind of it. I attempted to play Black/Sigma on PS3 and it just wasn't for me. One of those games I respect, but it didn't click with me. Great art style though. And as a DOA fan, I like that the NG universe was retrofitted in.

Shinobi on the other hand... I enjoyed the original game on SMS, the GG games, III and Revenge on Genesis (I even thought Shadow Dancer was kind of cool...). It just seems like there's more entries in this series that I spent time actually playing and getting into.
