Sub over dub any day. When I was younger dubbed was all I ever watched. Most of the stuff I watched was usually on Toonami or Adult Swim other then that I didn't really catch much. However once I went to college I really started getting into streaming it online since there was no TV in my room and really no space to put one(dorm was the size of a broom closet and there wasn't even wall space for a TV once my roommate moved in :P. Anyways what really drove me to anime was the difficulty of finding free sites streaming dubs. So i finally started watching subbed anime. While i didn't care much for it at first I quickly came to enjoy it and even re watched a variety of shows which I had previously watched dubbed versions of. I actually came to find that subs were vastly superior to dubs in many aspects and now I can't even stand to watch many dubbed shows because the English voice acting in many cases kills me :P. Shows feel completely different because the voices don't match up with the animation or in some cases even the tone of the scene. Plus in some cases information is left out or left unexplained in order to keep the lips synced or because it wouldn't make sense to a U.S. audience. Overall I don't think I could ever go back to watching dubs.

Put Simply:

1. Japanese Voice Acting fits the animation better and produces the proper atmosphere that the producers intended for each scene.

2. Dubs take so long to produce and many shows don't even get a proper dub.

3. Stuff gets lost in translation. Both due to a need to cut down conversations so that they sync to the animation, and because some information can get changed to prevent confusion in a different culture.

4. English voice acting at least in my opinion is in some cases such as Naruto targeted towards a younger audience. Since sadly in the case of American culture at least many people still see it as cartoons at least in my experience :P.

5. While subs can be hard to get used to at first once you have gotten used to them you hardly notice them.

On a side note I actually find fan subs to be better then the official subs in some cases.

Kind of off topic, but even in Japan, there's a very negative stigma associated to people who watch anime after graduating high school, or even middle school. Especially with Shueisha adaptations like Naruto or Bleach.

I lean heavily towards subs, though I have been giving more recent dubs a chance lately. At the very least, I've been comparing them myself instead of just going by other's say-so. I think, for the most part, dubs have improved quite a bit over the last couple years. They're still not consistent enough quality-wise, but they are better.

That was pretty much my first real exposure to it too, and while there are several shows from then that hold up well (Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star), there are other dubs that, going back, literally make me cringe (I'm looking at you, Sailor Moon.)

Since it was brought up and I'm thinking about it now, there are some dubs that I think are quite good or actually prefer to the original:

Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star

FullMetal Alchemist/Brotherhood
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
- I think the movies and the series had a pretty decent dub, actually.
Hellsing Ultimate - This may be more a preference to hearing English voices when the vast majority of the characters are in England.
RIN
Le Chevalier D'Eon - Again, this may be that it may be easier for me to hear people in France speaking English than Japanese.
Ghibli Movies - I'm going to guess that since these are released by Disney that they put a little extra time/money into creating a proper dub.

Dubs to avoid (these are only the one's I feel I've watched trough enough to really compare):
Mai(My)-HiME/Otome - Poor delivery, and poor casting choices in my opinion. Though I will give them brownie points for solving Shizuru's accent dilemma by giving her a southern-bell accent. It still sounds horribly wrong for her, but I'll give them the point for at least trying.

Sailor Moon - If I have to hear one more word of horrible 90's slang imma beat a moon princess. Add to that that voices don't match characters, genders wound up changed, surnames were changed, inconsistent attack names, and the one instance of insulting an entire culture and you have just touched upon the tip of the iceberg.

Trigun is pretty OK, Gurren Lagann is good and Sword Art Online is too, dub wise.

Yes, but the manga is far better. The series would be fine as an introduction (since that's basically all it covers in the first place)...except that it leaves things out that become important later.

For sure. The artwork alone is amazing. I was first introduced to the series through the anime and instantly became a fan. Though I was in complete shock after seeing the last two episodes because I didn't know what was happening. I continued on with the manga after that but kindof fell flat on it when the witch girl came in. I don't even remember her name to be honest. What do you think about the newer movies that have been coming out?

Haven't seen them yet, though as I understand, they're not comprehensive either.

So, only three episodes left in Trigun (I found the 7 DVD box set for like 20 bucks at a CD store). I'm really enjoying it. It's a shame the end is near. :(

Trigun is one of my faves. It slowly changes tone over the course of the series, but it is done well.
