Summer Games Challenge 2016
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2016
I don't really like the remake. The original is much better.

June, hell. I'm ready now.Ack wrote:Just you wait for when I start talking about my October film marathon...in June.
I've got a small pile of acquired VHS tapes sitting around, waiting in quiet anticipation for October.

I loved Crimson Peak, but just remember to go into it thinking "gothic ghost story" rather than 'horror' and you'll have a better time. I've read of many people being disappointed with it due to thinking it was going to be something different.

......which is good because I still have to finish that write-up for Sucker Punch that I know noise is eagerly anticipating.Michi wrote:I've got a small pile of acquired VHS tapes sitting around, waiting in quiet anticipation for October........
Is what I meant.

Okay. I'm gonna be moving SLOWLY through these games.
Kid Icarus (oops I mean Hikari Shinwa: Parutena no Kagami as my hipster ass bought the disk version) is a weird ass game. I dig the exploration and game world, but there are some really dated, frustrating, and janky mechanics. The game almost feels like a weird hybrid between Nintendo's questionable "black label" titles (Wrecking Crew, Ice Climber) and their competent action-adventures (Zelda, Metroid).

I messed around with it last week and got utterly annoyed by the constant grim reapers and their constant grim reaper babies. Other than that I liked what I saw.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Okay. I'm gonna be moving SLOWLY through these games.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2016
I think I am going to buckle down and try to clean out my Now Playing. I am currently playing 6 large RPG's and I would love to finish them off in the next few months.
- Shining Force (Genesis) - I have finished 20/30 battles.
- Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast) - I am on the final chapter, but the difficulty has jumped up significantly.
- Thousand Arms (Playstation 1) - I have about two chapters left.
- Metal Saga (Playstation 2) - I am at the most halfway through this game. This is the longest one by far.
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - I have about two chapters left.
- Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic - I have about four chapters left, but I am about 75% of the way through the game.

If you make it past 1-3 on Kid Icarus, you're golden. The game really picks up at that point.Exhuminator wrote:I messed around with it last week and got utterly annoyed by the constant grim reapers and their constant grim reaper babies. Re: Summer Games Challenge 2016
Kid Icarus has a famously inverted difficulty curve. Once you get a life extension or two, you've actually got a good buffer for survival. The game is a ton better from there.

Re: Summer Games Challenge 2016
I've been trying to come up with a list of 5-7 games for my list. I don't want to try to commit to more than 7 games. That's because personally I define the summer as June, July, and August. So I've got to focus on stuff I can finish in three months.
Anyway, I know for sure these are on my list:
Beneath Apple Manor* (Apple II) Roguelike
Dragon Quest II (GBC version) JRPG
Shadow Tower (PS1) Dungeon Crawler
What I'm wanting to add is a classic sci-fi adventure game. Maybe a Space Quest or Beneath A Steel Sky, something in that vein. Open to suggestions.
I'm also wanting to add a classic strategy title. No idea what yet. I mean it'd be easy to say "Front Mission 5" but I'm gonna play that anyway and it's honestly not that old. I'm thinking perhaps an older PC RTS of some sort. Get myself outside my comfort zone.
Lastly I'm looking at playing some MSX, X68000, and PC98 games via emulation. I'll likely stick with shmups and platformers for brevity's sake. But I can't let Bone have all that classic Japanese PC lovin' to himself.
*Although if I can get the 1978 version running BEFORE the summer I'll play it then.
