I remember watching that when it aired. Thanks.

The Screaming Skull

Ah, 1950s B-grade horror schlock. First, the DVD of this was poorly done, with horribly muffled sound and obviously damaged celluloid. There were a couple of sudden cuts where a few frames had been removed, though thankfully these were only short jumps of a handful of frames, enough to notice but not enough to ruin the film.

As for the film itself, it's a psychological(and supernatural) horror film about a woman who is haunted by the ghost of her husband's first wife in the large and barren mansion that was the first wife's family home. But what's really going on? Is it that the disabled gardener is playing a cruel trick? The plot is a bit flimsy, but the ultimate end is actually quite effective once the true supernatural horror begins. It is here that this movie really becomes interesting, and where the best special effects take place. Far better than the peacock shrieks and rolling skull, anyway.

"Huh. Interesting. Never heard of it."

*Walks into thrift store later that day. Pursues obviously newly added movie selection*

"Meh, meh, meh, me-..... :?: "

*"Warlock"*

".....Why does that look familiar.......?"

"Oh, look! There's more horror stuff too."

And I have no idea what most of them are.

Thanks Ack.

Ah, yes. I remember this now. It was in an episode of MST3k. You are very much right about the plot, but I thought the skull effects were decent enough, considering when it was made.

And I know you posted about this earlier, but did you know The Incredible Melting Man just recently got a Blu-ray release? Unless by "Not easily accessible" you meant you just wanted to buy stuff locally, which I totally get. I just thought I'd throw that out there.

I've seen Warlock a million times! That was one of those ones that seemed to be on Cinemax or whatever like every weekend when I was in Jr. High.

Well, I never found The Thing and The Thing From Another World all that similar. And the new one is a prequel, so...

They are all basically telling the same story, though. It wasn't bad as I feared it might be, but it can't hold a candle to the other two in the same "series".

but the new one tells the story of what happened to the people that the people in the Carpenter one were there to investigate. Unless you're just saying that "aliens in a snowy environment" is the same story regardless of characters or script?

I haven't seen it yet, though it's on my list. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of ...From Another World personally. But Carpenter's film is a definite 10/10 in my book.

Lucky bastard.

Warlock is the film I was talking about. Warlock: The Armageddon is the first "sequel," though I don't believe they are really connected in overall plot. It still has Julian Sands playing the Warlock character. There was a third direct-to-video film called Warlock III: The End of Innocence, but it has a completely different actor in the lead.

The Intruder Within was a made-for-TV film released n 1981 that was apparently advertised as a sequel to Alien. It focuses on a group of researchers on an oil rig in the Arctic that find prehistoric eggs, which then hatch.

Gate II: Return to the Nightmare is also known as Gate II and Gate II: Trespassers. It is a 1990 sequel to The Gate from 1987. The films focus on children summoning demons.

Silent Scream is the 1980 film by that name. It's a low-budget slasher film starring Barbara Steele.

The Curse is also called The Farm. It was produced by Lucio Fulci, and he helped with the special effects. It is based on an HP Lovecraft story, The Colour Out of Space. There are four films in the "series," but none are related.

The last one, Charlie Boy, is an episode of Hammer House of Horror focusing on Voodoo.

I didn't care for the skull on a pull string, but once it's up and walking around, I thought the effects got much better. I know it was low budget and in the 1950s, but I think it could have been handled better if the film had just run with the haunted house motif instead of the psychological aspect.

Yeah, I'm aware. The "Not easily accessible" tag was for films not locally available. I have a brother in Alabama searching in a store he works at for those, and I have access to Netflix and Amazon, so I do still have access. I just have to jump through a couple of hoops.

Yeah, the similarities and homages to Carpenter's film (which had some similarities and homages to the original) are peppered throughout, to the extent that it makes it hard to think of it as a distinct story. I get that they were trying to introduce a certain continuity with and relationship to that film, but I felt like it wasn't very well implemented. I almost wonder if it was marketed as a prequel because they thought calling it a "remake" would hurt sales. It strikes me as more of the latter than the former.

And yeah, Carpenter's version is the shit. Great film.
