Anyone Collect or Still Listen to Vinyl?
Re: Anyone Collect or Still Listen to Vinyl?
These ran me 0.25 each at a local garage sale today. Some good stuff here, especially for the price.
I also finally got a decent pair of floor speaker (250W each) for a total of $10, so I expect my vinyl collection to grow quite a bit more over the rest of the summer now that I have a decent setup downstairs for it.
I had just been using those shitty shelf system speakers that you now see on top. I'll still use those to put sound out the window from time to time since they can both be hooked up to the amp at the same time.
I could use a skip pad or something to place under it and balance it. Any suggestions?

Today, I found a Frank Sinatra album that's actually an album (4 records, 1 song on each side). Very cool! I also picked up two more for my broadway collection (Hello Dolly and West Side Story).
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

My turntable can only do 33/45, so I can't play 78s. Still, very cool!

I wish I hadn't gotten rid of the hand me down radio/turntable I had as a kid. It would do 16/33/45/78 and it had a quarter inch jack in the back so you could use it as a guitar amp as well.AppleQueso wrote:My turntable can only do 33/45, so I can't play 78s. Still, very cool!

Got me a new cartridge, but alas, it's far too light and I can't properly set the tracking force!
Gonna get a headshell weight to stick on there and set it again, as they're pretty cheap. In the mean time, I've got a penny taped to the top of the headshell. Not really planning to use it much for now, but I figure that'll do in a pinch.
It's like this stuff keeps being more and more of a moneysink!

Re: Anyone Collect or Still Listen to Vinyl?
I've come to a bit of a blockade. I love, love vinyl, but the cost, mixed with finding it and the issues with playing stuff anywhere other than home. (I'd rather not torrent them, and currently don't have a way to rip them.) Also, its not exactly like most people I would lend them to would be able to play them.
What can I do here? I'm feeling torrenting the tracks after I've bought the records would be an option, but then again I would have to torrent...

IDK if this was an ongoing conversation (I haven't read this thread in a while) but here are my thoughts...
You just need a stereo cable to plug into the input on your sound card or whatever device you are using. Output from your phono preamp or the headphones jack on your receiver or stereo unit (I don't know what your setup is). So depending on what you've got, you'll need any combination of 1/4", 1/8" or RCA plugs. Then on the software side, there's a number of things you can use. Audacity is free audio editing software. It's as simple as hit record, play the song, hit stop. Maybe trim the beginning and end of the track. That's it! And if you're too lazy to sit there and rip each song one by one, you could just record an entire album side then splice it into tracks once it's done.
You're on a computer, you already have the means to rip it yourself. As long as your computer's sound card doesn't completely suck, you'll be able to make decent rips. If you're approaching or are a full blown audiophile and you want your rips to be superb quality, a decent sound card or USB interface wont set you back that much. But your computer's sound card should be perfectly fine if all you wanna do is enjoy the music you buy on vinyl also on your mp3 player or in the car or whatever.Forlorn Drifter wrote:I've come to a bit of a blockade.
