Oh yeah, Halo 2 singleplayer was so bad. [Spoiler alert!] Oh, I fell down a hole in the earth and the plant from Little Shop of Horrors is keeping me and this guy who's my enemy, but my friend, and one of two playable characters, and the plant is explaining all this random crap about Halo, and I'm like WTF, and the other guy is like 4SrS.

Multiplayer was good though.

I really need to disagree.

I just completed my run through the Halo series by beating Halo 3. While Halo 3 was enjoyable, it was the least impressive of the series in terms of story, visuals, etc. I do enjoy it's multiplayer, but Halo 3's single player campaign wasn't very interesting.

From a single player perspective, I think Halo 2 stands hands down as the best in the series. I had no idea what to expect going in, so was really surprised when I was all of the sudden playing as the Arbiter. His story is infinitely more interesting - and he is a much more intriguing character - than the stereotypical space marine Master Chief (whose only distinguishing characteristic is a bizarre friendship/romance with the AI Cortana). Halo 2's weapon systems, difficulty, graphics, sound - every single detail was vastly improved over the previous game. The game expanded greatly upon the small world introduced in Halo 1, provided more tangible motives for those involved in the fight, and provided the kind of set pieces and climactic battles that have started to become standard in the best FPSs.

Halo 2 is probably the best console FPS single player campaign I have played from last gen, even if it falls victim to Return of the Jedi syndrome (blowing up a similar installation once again). If you can accept the fact that it ends on a cliffhanger with things left to be resolved, it doesn't need to make sense of the giant plant, etc. - that is all wrapped up (fairly satisfactorily) in Halo 3.

Halo 3 struck me as a graphical upgrade of Halo 2 with a less interesting single player campaign. It also had much more cliched settings, and didn't really expand on Halo 2 the way that 2 expanded on 1. So while after Halo 2 I was chomping at the bit to see where the series went, after finishing Halo 3 I have little interest in the spin-offs or playing any more Halo for a while.

In any case, despite strengths and weaknesses, the Halo series it is a very solid one overall and not deserving of the extreme hate - or the blind devotion - that it often gets.

Call of Juarez, for PC.

I really enjoyed the game, though I do have some mixed feelings about certain aspects. First off, I enjoyed the American frontier setting, and I think it's something that doesn't get done enough. So I enjoyed the appearance and mechanics behind the game, such as the different style revolvers and the ability to draw two pistols for a slow motion gun fight. The plot was...well, interesting. I like playing both the hunted man and the gunfighter going after him, and the racial aspects was nice in a field where it tends to not be brought up(one of the characters is the son of a Mexican man, and everyone else makes sure he knows it). The alternating styles of gameplay were nice, though generally I didn't enjoy the stealth aspects as much as running in guns blazing. Yet at the same time, my favorite episode involved me hunting rabbits in a massive section of maintains, woods, and fields along what probably was meant to be the Rio Grande.

I adored the landscapes, especially the wilderness, though I often found buildings lacking in detail. Character models were ok, but not spectacular, and the voice acting and dialogue was sometimes great, sometimes not so great. Still, musically, I thought the game was amazing.

I did run into a few technical issues, such as the game crashing when changing episodes, or with some of the character models freaking out when getting shot, or certain smoke effects appearing when they shouldn't. In one instance, I apparently set a rattlesnake on fire, as black smoke seemed to be erupting from its body. But as far as format is concerned, what upset me the most is that apparently the Xbox version of the game has a lot more features and unlockables. The PC version only includes the main storyline and multiplayer, while the Xbox version includes both of these along with extra episodes and a dueling mini game that can be unlocked. I felt a little cheated on the experience, as I believe both were released at the same time.

Honestly, my biggest complaint was that I felt railroaded through large portions of the game, which is upsetting because I really wanted to explore. If anything, this game built up in me a desire to see a game in the "Wild West" similar to something like Oblivion, Far Cry 2, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in terms of openness. I hear the sequel comes a few steps closer, though it's not quite there yet. I look forward to the day where I can play a game set in something like the entirety of 1850s Bloody Kansas, for instance.

Either way, I liked it. And now I'm moving on the newest Turok game.

I'm about to play this too, so maybe we can compare notes.

I can't agree more! It's not my favorite game of all time, but it's definitely a fun game. I would actually suggest playing through Halo 3: ODST if you liked the other ones. It has the same Halo gameplay mechanics, but the atmosphere is different than any other Halo game. It's short, but definitely a fun play.

Ooph, dsheinem, we're going to have an interesting conversation. I think I'm almost through the main storyline of Turok, and I really do not like this game.

The game is on it's way to me so I won't have it until late this week, unfortunately. In any case I didn't care for the previous Turoks much either so I am not sure why I even picked this up - I guess I was more interested in this than anything else on the list of the person I was trading with - and I didn't give up anything I cared about to get it.

In any case, killing dinosaurs SHOULD be fun, so hopefully there is something redemptive in it...
