What was the last movie you've seen?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Just started my yearly watching of the Rocky series. Finished the first one, as always I love the ending of the first movie.
ALLL RIGHT ROCCCKKOO!!
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Funny thing about that. I remember quite a few people saying they loved it when it first came out only to do a complete 180 when they realized a few people were panning it (OMG! The internet says this movie sucks! I hate this movie now!). My theory is that a lot of people are closet fans of these movies, but they pretend not to be because they're insecure and they want to make fun of people on the internet without being made fun of themselves. Seems pretty silly to me.dsheinem wrote:Man of Steel has been largely panned as another subpar comic book film by everyone except people who seem to like basically everything with a superhero in it, regardless of quality.

Well I've not seen it so I don't have much of an opinion. I'll catch it on HBO or some such. For the most part it was consistently seen as a missed opportunity and a soulless, plot-filled mess by people who's opinion on film I value.Retrodude wrote:Funny thing about that. Just because your friends didn't like it (or claim not to) doesn't mean that you won't. There's a film critic in Asheville whose opinion I respect, but I disagree with him about as often as I agree. There's nothing wrong with that. It's called thinking for yourself (which most of the internet seems unable or unwilling to do).

After reading through a bunch of his movie reviews and having spoken a little bit to him about comic books and what he doesn't like about them in person. I don't think I'd recommend Man of Steel to him.Retrodude wrote:Just because your friends didn't like it (or claim not to) doesn't mean that you won't. And stop with the "people secretly liked it but are acting hip" nonsense. I'm sure that's true of a tiny minority of Internet trolls but usually when somebody actually likes something they tend to want to see it succeed. Sometimes people's initial reactions to things change after they've had time to stew over the flaws.
I generally love comic book films. I love seeing my childhood fantasies play out on the big screen even if the plots are often thin. But I also want them to be well crafted cinema. That doesn't necessarily mean deep, profound, serious, light-hearted, corny or silly. Those things are mutually exclusive to whether a film is good or bad.
A stupid movie can be as well made as serious one and while I feel like "it's supposed to be dumb" is a valid response to some concessions that comic book movies take (especially in the area of suspension of disbelief of course) it's often extended into an excuse for bad film making and when fans cross that line they're selling themselves short and sending the message to studios that they're fine with a sub-par product.
On the surface something like Man of Steel and Avengers may appear to be nearly the same film but mechanically they're very different. There are reasons that one worked and one didn't. There are reasons why critical response to one is high and the other is lackluster. It's not because there's some kind of crazy conspiracy to hate Superman.
But really, nobody is trying to take anything away from the people who enjoyed the film and nobody can take that enjoyment away. It's yours to enjoy. That's what it's there for. But it doesn't mean people shouldn't be critical and shouldn't try to analyze its worth as a movie whether you agree with their points or not.

Retrodude, you have no business criticizing people for not "thinking for themselves" when you gush over everything you watch like you are the official PR spokesperson for that film. Again, until you start talking about/explaining why some films aren't very good (with examples) while others are (everything, apparently), it is hard to have any kind of meaningful discussion with you about comic book (or any other kind of) films.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I liked Man of Steel and I don't like everything that has a superhero in it. I didn't care for Wolverine Origins or Iron Man 2. I still haven't seen some of the others that are sometimes panned, such as Green Lantern or Amazing Spider-man. The greatest annoyance to me about Man of Steel is the product placement, which is out of control.dsheinem wrote:I liked Nolan's trilogy, but this is no relation. It may turn out to be good, but I'm not expecting much more than a script designed to sell toys and merchandise.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Eh, I'd just put it alongside the Dark Knight Rises. The updated origin story was well done, the characters and motivations are good, but the actual plot events are easy to rip apart on the way home from the theater.Stark wrote: I liked Man of Steel and I don't like everything that has a superhero in it. I was going to mention the same thing, that plenty of people seemed to enjoy it. And that it made plenty of money. So I'm not sure where the idea that the consensus that it was a bad film is coming from.dsheinem wrote:Well I've not seen it so I don't have much of an opinion. I'll catch it on HBO or some such. But I don't agree with the "closet fan" thing.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Wolverine Origins is my third favorite X-Men related film. I plan to see the new one...
