Actually I was thinking I would go for Secret of Evermore next, followed by Robotrek. That should give me some time to track down Soul Blazer so I can play those two in order.

I will def. hit up both Evermore and Soul Blazer next year. Not sure when I'll get to them though. Grandia will consume most of January.

Have you guys both not played Evermore? Man... story isn't that great, but the atmosphere is incredible. Jeremy Soule did the music and I really wish he did more on the SNES.

I don't put it above the two Mana games, but it stands out enough on its own with the dog, time travel, the weird mixing ingredients thing, etc. Combat is definitely smoother than Mana. I think these three have basically one of the best battle systems ever, it's so satisfying and fun to me.

It does have a few weird game design moments that can be frustrating, like this weird trade/sales thing you have to do at this one point and a desert maze to get there. But it's been ages since I've played it so maybe I just sucked back then. lol

Seiken Densetsu 3's combat is the best of the Mana games (where I count Evermore as a Mana game from a mechanics perspective). Your AI partners can effectively attack enemies and they replaced the worthless charge attacks with special moves once you've racked up enough hits that are really satisfying to use.

I have played Evermore many times. Got it shortly after launch back in the day.

I have a tendency to replay games again and again...

All I know about SOE is that it was developed in America.

I really wanted to like Secret of Evermore but the crappy hit detection makes it so hard for me to like it. Even picking stuff off the ground is a chore. And good lord, that damn flea market...

And I love the idea behind the story, but it just wasn't executed that well. I love the "boy and his dog" stuff, but I felt zero connection between the two.

This should be next.

And I would play Soul Blazer before playing Illusion of Gaia.
I vote Illusion of Gaia, I'd be curious to see what you think of it Ack. Personally... I can't say I liked it all that much. But I honestly think it has something to do with it probably having a terrible translation.
It's not even the translation... the story is just THAT weird and messed up.

That sums up Mana for me. Secret of Mana > Chrono Trigger / FFVI

Basically the greatest real time JRPG battle system ever. I can't believe we haven't seen anything as awesome since then. From what I've played of some of the newer Y's I don't like them quite as much, and even Legend of Mana felt like a big downgrade.
