I was doing TV series search, when I realised there are shows that run for 50 seasons like General Hospital.

I mean where does that show start from and how can you continue a story that long, or even how can you make people continue to watch a single show for that long period?

Its just plain weird when good shows get canceled due to low ratings, but a soap opera that has been on for 50 years still got viewers.

How does that work?

Soap operas are a different beast all together. Once people get into the scandals and love octagons that are in the viewers (mostly women) do not let them go. Heck one of my friends was introduced to Guiding Light when she was a child and watched it almost daily until it finally ended a couple years ago. She only logged 20 years into the show, her mother and grandmother have about 50 - the show went for 72 years of Radio and TV.

Or you could have said "Because almost every woman desires to be Erica Kane". If I was at home, sick from school, I would always watch AMChildren.

You could have also said "It's the equivalent of WWE (wrestling) for women".

I involuntarily said "ugh" when I read this. Well done.

You have never watched a soap opera. Every few years they bring in atleast one new character, and kill off one or force one to leave. Like I said, Guiding Light went for 72 years. That is long enough that one of the original writers great grandchildren worked on it. Just go read the wikipedia entry for Guiding Light or All My Children.
