What shitty cars are people around you driving? Unless you don't know how to drive or aren't doing proper maintenance, there should only be regular replacement items like tires, brakes, spark plugs, oil, filters and things like that. If you need a new car after 2 years then the car is garbage or you're doing it wrong.

But again, I was only talking about buying things anyway.
I agree with 2 years being too little but most people who change cars every 2 years have a lease. 4 years makes sense to change to a new car makes sense to me though. That's what my family does. They usually get a 48 month loan and after that trade it in and get a new one. By that time it has accumulated a good amount of mileage, starts to get beat up and has in a sense become outdated. I understand you're talking about the buying aspect but comparing cars to games just doesn't make sense.

Oh my gosh, seriously? Like, seriously? How many miles do ya'll put on a car for it to have "accumulated a good amount of mileage"? Beat up? Don't you respect your vehicle? Outdated? A good vehicle is timeless.

Collecting retro games is consumerism, but not nearly on the level of buying a new car every 2 to 4 years. That's just stupid, and a waste of money.

AAAAAAlllllso speaking of which, I really wish I had some money to buy something else. There are some goood looking Cougars on craigslist for only $4500...

How many miles do ya'll put on a car for it to have "accumulated a good amount of mileage"? - My father puts close to 100k and my mother close to 70k in 4 years.

Beat up? Don't you respect your vehicle? - Wear and tear is bound to happen.

Outdated? A good vehicle is timeless. - Then I guess you won't mind driving a '88 Datsun then? You know, considering cars are timeless and all.

Collecting retro games is consumerism, but not nearly on the level of buying a new car every 2 to 4 years. That's just stupid, and a waste of money. - Idk if you know about 'trade-ins' but that greatly reduces the cost of buying a new car.

You should really look into getting a '77 Honda Civic. They're gosh darn timeless!

I've had my car for two years and often travel out of state, and I've not yet managed to put 30k on my car. What is it your parents do exactly to add all this mileage?

Actually, from the sound of it, you're basing your argument solely on personal experience without considering that a large number of Americans(especially those that live within major cities) don't have to rely on or even own a vehicle to survive.

Sure, but routine maintenance can help prevent it. Just like with our video games.

There are several points in my life where I would have been perfectly happy to be driving a '88 Datsun, or any car at all. Screw what the car looks like, I would have appreciated the freedom, the mobility, and the independence that owning a vehicle represented. Those are timeless emotions that can easily be inspired by any model of automobile, even a Ford Pinto. He also said good vehicle, which could be considered subjective.

So do buy-back and trade-in programs at stores like Gamestop, along with sales like "Buy-1-get-1-free." I don't know if you know about them, but it greatly reduces the cost of buying a new video game.

He might actually feel that way. And while I'm not privy to his financial situation, it could be that this would be all he can afford. Some people purchase older cars like this to get that freedom and independence I mentioned earlier and to get around. Others treat them as a luxury, run them into the ground, and go buy new ones every couple of years. Maybe your parents do that. I don't know. But I'm not going to criticize them over it.

As for your original argument, are we being materialist for purchasing over +25 games? Perhaps. For some of us, collecting is a joy in and of itself. The search becomes a part of the hobby. For me, it is a great thrill to acquire a new game, clean it, and put it in the Super Nintendo for the first time to take a five minute run at a title I have never tried before. Just long enough to get a feel for the gameplay. I will eventually try to come back to it, so long as life does not get in the way. Eventually I would like to own a complete SNES collection, so I can enjoy my games, learn about them, and share my knowledge with others. I don't care for boxes or manuals, I want the games to play and to be able to share with others.

Now, why do I do this? Because it brings me joy, and I have reached a point in my life where I have the financial means to do so. But others may find joy in different aspects, and it is not my place to judge or criticize them over how they approach their hobby. Now, if they don't have the financial means to do such collecting and yet continue to do it, then yes, I'd agree it is toxic. But if they have the means and resources and find some sort of fulfillment, I say why not?

But I should also note I don't know of too many folks who acquire over 25 games in a month. I've certainly never done it. Maybe there are a couple of guys here who do, but I actually don't read the yearly game acquisitions thread.

I have been waiting for an excuse to post the sweet bike I built...

This five hundred dollar bike will last me much longer then any five hundred dollar car. Although considering I got all the parts direct from a distributor or manufacturer, price wise it's actually worth much much more then that.

Actually I'd love to have a 77 Civic. Nissan stopped using Datsun in the US around 83 or 84. I miss the 86 Stanza Wagon (Prarie) that we had and would probably be pretty happy with a number of 88 Nissan vehicles. My 05 Saabaru looks pretty darn good for the most part and only has about 65K miles on it.

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed

I don't remember if he has one, but if he has a 9-2x Aero he's got a fantastic car. Basically a WRX but with a nicer interior and exterior.
