Don't forget the deal that Atari almost made with Nintendo for US distribution of the Famicom. In hindsight......

I think I've figured out part of what has been causing such a rut in my gaming, besides my trophy obsession. I've been too focused on niche, underground, or quirky games, rather than just playing what I want. I have hardly even touched any mainstream games lately. I just need to accept that I like mindless first and third person shooters.

It's very common to hit that phase where you try and only consume non-mainstream games/music/movies/books. Then you get older and realize that popular things are popular for a reason and it doesn't automatically make them bad.

I'm not really sure where this came from, because I passed that phase a while back. I think it was more of me focusing on my collecting/grab the hidden gems while I can phase. Really, I'm finding that a decent amount of these games I've been hounding after are just alright, fulfilling for a very specific group of people, or just plain suck.

Being popular doesn't automatically make them good either. Really it depends on your ability to acclimate yourself to the taste of the lowest common denominator. Sure I like cotton candy roller coasters as much as the next guy, but too many in a row and the gaming starts to feel hollow.

Ditto. Good to have some balance.
I've gotten pickier over the last few years and it's been great, and remembered a lot of key things... Japanese developed games are almost always more my thing, I love Nintendo first party games and don't care what others say, and am tapping back into genres like platformers that for whatever reason I fell out of for a long time and don't know why! I play what I want and what looks good to me, not what others say is good or sucks!
(but of course friends and trust worthy sources like you guys here can alter things! lol)
Intuition is a powerful thing.

Indeed; my point was that never touching anything that's popular because "it's so mainstream" is just as bad as only experiencing stuff that's been properly packaged for Joe Everyman.
Donkey Kong 64 just keeps going on and on, doesn't it? I just finished the 4th world, have collected all golden bananas, banana medals, company coins, battle crowns, and banana fairies from those worlds. And I think I've gotten everything I can on DK Island so far. But other than some banana hunting in Gloomy Galleon to get the last two banana medals it hasn't felt like I'm faffing about; it's exploring all the nooks and crannies of these levels.

Yup, it's a big ol' game. I really enjoy it though.
It's good that you're getting everything you can as you go. The giant fish in Gloomy Galleon is glitched, at least in the PAL version, so that if you have too many Golden Bananas it becomes impossible to finish on time as the fan blade spins for too long for some reason.
It took me 12 years to figure that one out. I eventually did it by looking away from then fan as it spun and guessing the timing to quickly turn and shoot. The fan only spun slower if you looked at it.

Umihara Kawase games delisted from Steam.
