I played about halfway through the SNES version (I had just reached the underground world for the first time). The only reason I stopped is becauseI lost my save data. The story translation is one thing, but the naming of items, spells, etc is what really annoyed me. I eventually played through the game, and I decided on the PS1 version. I like that version a lot. Not only is the translation a lot better, and items / spells use the naming that match other FF games, but because of the fonts everything ends up looking better too. Oh yeah, and you can run.
So FF4 was released on the SFC. Then it was released as FF2 on the SNES in NA. Then the SFC got FF4 "Easytype" which is apparently a tad easier than the SNES version. I always found that kind of odd.
List of hacks and translations, if anyone is interested...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. How does everyone think FF7 has aged?

Just watched that...you've definitely got some great points in there though. I definitely didn't own it when I was little and yeah the graphics haven't aged well but the way they did the game helps it a little. Would be nice with that remake instead of remaking it they slapped it in a modern engine and did the camera better. Would make it a little more approachable for me once i get to the point of really playing it at this point...
My gameroom
My systems: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, original gba, gba sp(001), ds lite, 3ds, vita, psp, PSone(101 model) ps2, ps3(320gb model), ps4, retron 5, and Dreamcast.

I think that's what just about everyone was hoping for, oh well
Re: SNESdrunk reviews
I played FF7 for the first time in 2007, so a good 10 years after it was first released. I've only played it the one time. Since it's been 10 years now, maybe I have rose-tinted glasses on, same as those in 2007 that played the game in 1997? I can't be sure. But that game definitely charmed me when I played it.
The graphics were massively outdated when I played it in 07, as much as they are today. Basically, any PS1 game that isn't 2D is like "OMG MY EYES ARE BLEEDING!" for the first several minutes, but then you adjust. I'm not gonna hold that against FF7, especially since you can play it on PC if you want.
What I will say about the visuals though, once you get past the jarring PS1 graphics, is that the game is beautiful. All of the locations are very well done, and add to the overall feel of the game (along with the music, story, dialog, etc).
Yeah... The screen changes and it takes you a few seconds to play Where's Waldo Cloud. I thought that was more funny than annoying. And yes, some screens aren't clear on where you can walk or climb and it takes a little trail and error. I never found it so annoying though that it took away from my enjoying the game.
I really enjoyed the combat and materia system in the game. It wasn't so simple that it felt like a beginner's RPG, but it wasn't so deep and complicated to the point it becomes annoying (which is how I feel about some RPGs).
I've been wanting to play FF7 for a second time, but I have a hard time justifying replaying RPGs. Just because they take so long to complete, and I own so many RPGs that I haven't played yet. I feel sort of guilty replaying an RPG instead of playing a new one.

Anything that impedes my progress like that sets me off. I'm not very good with traffic either.

Sounds like a modded version for PC would be the way to go nowadays, so at least that would be something kinda sorta different and new

I could start a whole thread about this. I've always been an impatient person, but I've been getting more patience as I get older. With video games, there's a lot of games that I just couldn't play when I was younger that I ended up enjoying as my attitude changed. Metal Gear Solid, for example. Stealth? I didn't have the patience for that, I'd rather run 'n gun, Rambo style. So I stuck with shitty console FPS games.
FF7 is another good example for me. Before 2007, I actually made an attempt at playing the game once before. It wasn't that I wasn't enjoying the game itself, I just didn't have the mind to enjoy it for what it was (if that makes any sense). As soon as I made it out of Midgar, I lost all interest and stopped playing.
Don't get me wrong, though. When I was playing, I found those "the path isn't clear" screens to be annoying. I was just enjoying all the other aspects of the game too much to let that one thing bother me. It's not like it's every screen.

Ha, yeah, I have to tell myself stuff like that so I don't feel guilty. I actually have the game on Steam.

I know what you mean, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my example. I hated that game until recently. Just because you die 5 times in two minutes doesn't have to be an indictment of the game, that's just... kinda how you play it at first, before you learn all the patterns. Taught me a LOT about patience and failure
Re: SNESdrunk reviews
Not sure why you would feel guilty replaying games Ziggy. It's no rush... I love replaying games!
I think FF7 has aged very well. Yeah you've got the blocky character graphics, but there's some funny charm to them, and otherwise I think the game looks gorgeous with all the low res pre-rendered backdrops. It has a very cool, dark gritty atmosphere to it. The Materia system is fantastic and the battle system is fast and fun. It's got some goofy moments like the marching scene (controls) or the Gold Saucer stuff... but otherwise it's still my favorite FF after the SNES games by a large margin, and the one I've replayed a few times over alongside FF4 and FF6.
In retrospect, I've never felt compelled to replay FF9 and recall the battles feeling a lot slower and sluggish, even when you bump up the ATB speed. And while I loved FF8 my first time through and honestly love it's weird fragmented story, and it's incredible setting and levels... I have failed to replay it fully at least 3 times by now over the years. Main reason being the micro management for the drawing magic system (I get really OCD with it), and the Junction system is awful. The game constantly switches you to Laguna's perspective and 9 times out of 10 if your Junction's don't carry over from one character to one of his party, you have to re configure you entire Junction setup. Nowadays this is something I just don't have patience for anymore with some old JRPG's, too much micro management of systems in between the battles and all... kind of like some of the Tales games that have awful cooking mechanics (Graces F...) ... it's a shame because I otherwise still like FF8 a lot, but as a more gameplay driven player it's just too tiresome to manage all that junk.
I had a blast with FF10 a second time around with the HD release, but I still feel like it falls apart a bit near the end. Though the ending itself is fantastic.
So in comparison... FF7 is still my favorite 3D FF by a large margin, and still retains some elements of the older ones. It's a very strange game in between two eras. It's so early "PS1" it's amazing, if that even makes sense. It gives me these awesome feelings I get alongside Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, Crash, etc. I think the story and characters are very flawed, sometimes even annoying, and Sephiroth a bit overrated... but FF7 excels in its charm for me. It's just so fun and simple.
You can actually get really tricky with the Materia system in the late game. To the point of basically being invincible... oh did Red XIII die? Well he's going to auto-cast Phoenix and be revived while healing everyone. 4x Attack, Mimic, etc. It's hilarious. I absolutely love the system and wish we could have seen it again. Granted, FF7 is maybe a bit too easy difficulty wise if you put just an ounce of effort into it.

Re: SNESdrunk reviews
Thanks for posting your thoughts, Xeogred. I figured you could abuse the materia system toward the end but to the game's credit I never quite latched onto how to do that the right way.
