Man I always forget that the Famicom launched in 1983. Just one year after the Vectrex, Atari 5200, and ColecoVision.
Those Fami launch titles (Popeye and the like) look only marginally better than Coleco games.
Another thought: damn Steam is addictive in many ways. Killed about an hour the other night just browsing the site. Came across this eventually:

Yeah, that can be a pain. I had more issues with the turning controls reversing when you backed up if enemies were nearby myself.
Have you found the shurikens yet? I went through a lot of the game before I got those, and I wish I'd got them earlier. Really helps with shielded enemies.
I got them early on Juno apparently and forgot I had them on him since my save file already had him at Mizar's palace. I got them on Vela when I was doing her unique stage in Goldwood and it was quite helpful for the full shielded drones in that stage. For the half shielded ones I just charge them with the machine gun and try to turn around them and it works pretty well. When I was on Ichor with Vela against the full shielded ones I said fuck it and tri-rocketed them in the face.

I've heard the final boss is a dick. I still need to find the Homing Missile for Juno; I had it on Vela and it made her boss loltrivial along with the tri rocket launcher for the first sections.

Tri-rockets will help too. And lots of machine gun ammo, of course.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Yup. After half a dozen attempts I got a good pattern with only one jumping rope and was able to work through the three phases with the last of my homing rockets and my machine gun for the transitions and I still had two full bars of health left. Didn't even bother doing anything but spamming tri-rockets on the last phase. Dodging is unnecessary.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
My one big complaint in JFG were those little minigames where you pilot a small robot down some tubes or whatever. Man, I hated those. The rest of it was a blast.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Fortunately you only need to do two of those; the first is to get a ship part and you need a gold medal and the second is the very end of the game and is trivially easy to beat. The one you need the medal on took me several tries because you need to get things perfect and the analog controls would first move the targeting reticle and then your view, making things very imprecise.

If homebrew taught us anything it's that the ColecoVision could have done a lot more itself if it had survived longer. Still not as good as the NES but it would have made for an interesting competitor.
Hell, some sources have said the Famicom almost was the ColecoVision, but Coleco turned down their offer and Nintendo decided to design their own hardware. What a different history that would have been.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I wonder how the ColecoVision stacks up against the Atari 7800 when you really look at what it could do at the high end.
