Really? I like that one, as goofy stupid as it is. I honestly think that is how the whole 80's was.Ack wrote:I've been avoiding it, but I think my girlfriend recorded it to her TVR when she had a free weekend of HBO...Retrodude wrote:On my scale of awesomely bad movies, I would rate Howard just below Battleship and just above Street Fighter. What was the last movie you've seen?

I finally watched Avengers. And while I thought it was a good fun summer action movie, it is going to be dated soon. So many 2010 film making cliches.

Why is that?fastbilly1 wrote:... it is going to be dated soon.

The funny thing about The Avengers is if the same movie had been made ten years ago, it would have been lambasted as one of the cheesiest, corniest movies ever, but today, it's widely considered awesome because the audience is willing to accept the kind of good-natured silliness inherent in the superhero genre. We've come a long way.fastbilly1 wrote:I finally watched Avengers. And while I thought it was a good fun summer action movie, it is going to be dated soon. So many 2010 film making cliches.

Skipping the CG aging. There are filmmaking techniques common to different eras. Ie it is easy to date a film to the 70s if they use snap zooms. One of the common ones from the 2000s is the camera in the car as a CG car rolls into it, which they used in Avengers atleast twice. Other things like the use of odd angles and weird framing, mostly to show off the set. Id have to rewatch it to give you a solid list.Luke wrote:Why is that?fastbilly1 wrote:... it is going to be dated soon.
I really enjoyed the film, it was a fun summer blockbuster, but things like that just irk me.

Wait, do you mean Howard the Duck? I was talking about Battleship in my reply. I actually own Howard the Duck.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Really? I like that one, as goofy stupid as it is. That also happened on its release.Retrodude wrote: The funny thing about The Avengers is if the same movie had been made ten years ago, it would have been lambasted as one of the cheesiest, corniest movies ever...
LABYRINTH
Still holds up as an amazing fantasy film.
Understood. If you took a shot for every establishing shot, you'd have liver disease by the second act.fastbilly1 wrote: Other things like the use of odd angles and weird framing, mostly to show off the set.

I'm also a big fan of seeing how film advertisements and trailers have evolved over the years, ranging from the rough early days where a voiceover would give establishing information along with constant text overlays in a variety of fonts which obscure the film to explain it to the modern "heartbeat," the use of popular music (or dubstep), the matching of audio and video, etc. One that I absolutely love is the censorsing of swear words but still giving the implication of what was said, usually by splicing in an explosion ("Son of a - BOOM!" or "Suck my - BANG!").fastbilly1 wrote:Skipping the CG aging.
