Carlin was a comedian, not a prophet (although he was a comedy God).
Black people don't like being called Niggers by white people, gays don't like being called a faggot by straight people, and for some reason some Jews don't like being called Jews.
Saying "Fag" is still distasteful.

I did my downstairs shower with it; so this was my second time. It is (obviously) considerably heavier than wallboard, and thus comes in smaller sheets (3x5 or 4x4). Even 1/2" thick small sheets like that are tough to manage but not too bad on a floor of course. I def. recommened the 4x4 for stud alignment - i'm not sure of the benefit of 3'x5' sheets, but they seem to be sold in similar quantities.fastbilly1 wrote:mjmjr25, how was it working with cement board? Ive always been interested but have never really had a use for it.
It does not cut like wallboard - it will score and snap - but you need to score at least 1/3" the way through, which again, requires just a lot more effort than wallboard. For and non-linear cuts, use a jig-saw w/masonry blade - like butter, but it will vibrate like crazy on you, so a second set of hands to hold steady is helpful.
Lastly, invest in the write cement board screws for an extra $1/box. Yes, drywall screws will work, but the cement screws penetrate so much more easily off the get go - it is worth it. Since it naturally absorbs moisture and evaporates it out - the mastic or other mud will dry out and set much more quickly on cement board as well.

But why would they be calling each other cigarettes? I don't understand.irixith wrote:If only more people understood the world the way Carlin did.Retrodude wrote:Stuff like that doesn't bother me so much since George Carlin explained on one of his albums that originally, it just meant the guy was a sissy, nothing more ("We all knew what a queer was, a queer was a queer. It's only jerks and homophobes that have turned it into something else.Luke wrote:When they call each other "Fags" I thought, "This wouldn't fly today".
Also, relevant nerdcore video.
I think you're vastly overestimating the number of people (Americans at least) who had seen The Seventh Seal even when Bogus was in the theater.Retrodude wrote: Bogus Journey's problem is that it's a parody of a film almost no one has seen these days (Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal). I really want to, but until I start working I have no real income. Also, even though I'm legally entitled to leave home, they act like I can't simply because all the things I'll do on my own I don't do now, like washing dishes, cleaning up after myself and the like. I know how, but in all honesty, unless the laundry and dishes are at least 90% mine, then why do them? If I screw it up somehow, I don't want it to be everyone else's clothes that get ruined or end up giving everyone stomach issues from improperly-washed dishes.prfsnl_gmr wrote:The economy is no longer terrible, and - even if it were - the price of vintage video games is at an all time high. Moreover, given your family's situation, I do not think that you should look to any of them for financial advice, and you should not allow them to bully you into selling your items for a fraction of their fair market value.REPO Man wrote: My brother's still trying to convince me that I should give up on trying to make any real profit from selling all my games and just settle for a low figure, like around $450-500, despite the fact that they're worth double that. But he thinks that just because the economy's in the crapper, I should aim low and just hope to get at most half of what I'm asking. And after that, I still have tons of stuff to sell (I estimate about $200 worth of stuff, so by my brother's logic I should expect to get about $75 for it all).
Please, please, as soon as possible: (1) sell your games; (2) save up your money (3) move out (to New York or anywhere else); (4) leave your family behind; and (5) do something with your life. Your writing and interests indicate that you are an intelligent young man, but your family is really, really dragging you down. As far as I can tell, you all live hand-to-mouth and one step away from the streets. You can do a lot better than that if you are disciplined and set your mind to escaping, and if nothing else, the members of this forum - myself included - are always here to offer advice and set you on the right track.
And part of the reason I want to move to New York is because all the things I wanna do is best done in New York where the resources are in the greatest abundance. I mean, when the law enforcement has a unit just for TV and Movies, then that says something. It's also easier to raise funds for films, among other things, since I also wanna use the money I make filmmaking to, aside from making more films, expand into other industries. And when I'm rich, then I can finally start helping out my family. Help them buy a house, and not just rent something. Help my nieces, nephews (some day) and even my own children (who I refuse to bring into a world without being rich, because raising children in poverty is the pits) go to college. But all they think of when they think of me in New York is me acting the same way as I do here (i.e. listening to my iPod everywhere and all the time, et al), when I know that I can't act like this.
And I know they're "dragging me down", but they're my family and I love them. But I don't love their attitudes. The way they think. Their often-Wormwoodish attitudes.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
They also say that I shouldn't just trust what I've read on the Internet about moving to New York City. And that just because it says something online that makes sense doesn't mean that it does. Like when I read about how much easier it is to move to New York than they think, my brother immediately says that I "let the Internet run [my] life". He also says that sometimes I can't just "do it online", with the "it" being anything from getting help with a problem to paying/managing a bill online.
I also notice that lately, whenever I don't listen to them, the end results usually justify not having listened to them. Like my mom told me not to ride my bike outside the community, but the first time I did, nothing bad happened. In fact, I felt confident enough to do it again and again. She told me not to ride the bus alone, and until we got the van it was my preferred mode of transportation besides my bike. In fact, more good happens when I don't listen to her or anyone else in my life.

Repo, I don't know if this helps, but you don't necessarily have to move to New York to get into filmmaking. I live waaaaaaay out in BFE, but 90 minutes away in Asheville, there's an annual film festival that I plan to try and show my movie at when it's finished (not in competition) in the hopes that I can get someone with money interested in listening to some of my ideas. Check around, maybe there's a local film festival in your area. Your first film doesn't have to be a masterpiece, it just has to show that you've got potential. If you have a film idea that's doable now, do it. There's nothing stopping you.

I have a few ideas that are doable... is what I'd say if I had friends that would/could help out. I mean, I can't just play each character, run the camera and use the rest of the equipment. I've wanted to make a short film based on a news story, after it was presented as a good idea for film students by John Waters.Retrodude wrote:Repo, I don't know if this helps, but you don't necessarily have to move to New York to get into filmmaking. And the reason I chose New York is for a multitude of reasons.
For one, its filmmaking industry is second only to Hollywood's. They also say (and by say, I mean "quote Sinatra") that if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Also, with so many different kinds of people, finding people I relate to should be idiotproof. And there just seems to be the most to do, regardless of what you're into. If you're a film buff, they have movie theaters that play films that are old, indie, foreign, obscure, cult or some combination of the five. If you're a ludophile and/or comic book fan, there's a bevy of great comic book stores. If you're a video gamer, they have plenty of arcades and video game stores. If you're an artist and/or actor and/or filmmaker and/or fashion designer and/or singer and/or songwriter, there's already a dedicated community for you. It's an imperfectly perfect paradise for all kinds.
But it doesn't matter. Family's like the mob, because once you're in, there's no getting out. God knows I wish I could find my own place, but without enough money, connections, friends or a family that trusts me it's no wonder I haven't tried yet.

What's the longest you've ever been there for? I've found that it's cool for like a week max, but other than that it is insufferable.REPO Man wrote:And the reason I chose New York. It's an imperfectly perfect paradise for all kinds.
