Exactly. I'm not invested in the character, I'm invested in the story and what's happening to ME. It's part of the whole reason I play games to begin with!o.pwuaioc wrote:I'm not invested in Link or Gordon Freeman. I am Link and Gordon Freeman.

Otherwise why anyone would be invested in him as a character in that world? Is he signing to the other people and we just can't see? I'm sorry, but it would be happening to YOU if you could make meaningful choices about the story and if the characters around you reacted differently to you depending on your choices. That would be YOU.irixith wrote:Exactly. I'm not invested in the character, I'm invested in the story and what's happening to ME. With gordon freeman (and Link I guess), everyone already reacts to him in a very specific way, because for those characters there IS a "person" called Gordon freeman. No matter WHAT your actions are, the characters will still react the same way. This means that you are not the protagonist, he already exists. It's just that we can hear him.
But I will agree that now it's too late for Half Life. They could do it for Zelda though I think

You can put me in the silent protagonist camp. I much prefer a silent (and preferably unnamed) protagonist. I am sure that I am not the only one who remembers the old days when NPCs would address you by the name of your save file...irixith wrote:Exactly. I always thought it was weird that you could give Link some other name.prfsnl_gmr wrote:You can put me in the silent protagonist camp. I much prefer a silent (and preferably unnamed) protagonist. I was thrown for a loop first time I played Phantasy Star. Turns out you literally just name your save file, not the lead character. Guess it's for the best, as the lead character is female.

In the NES games, you were just naming your save file, not the character. Not sure why it morphed into the character, since everyone knows he is Link.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I always thought it was weird that you could give Link some other name.

That's weird. I don't know how people can do that. I'm sitting on my ass, drinking some pepsi, and pushing some buttons on a controller. I'm not saving the world and destroying an evil empire. I think that's why I've always disliked the buzzword "immersion" so much. It doesn't exist for me.irixith wrote:Exactly. Being frank, very few games are actually as immersive as advertised.ZeoDefender wrote:I think that's why I've always disliked the buzzword "immersion" so much. It doesn't exist for me.
