That said, JPN and more modern western roguelikes do make more nods to fairness than the text-based ones of old, so in a way, complaining that modern roguelikes aren't fair or balanced well is kinda like complaining that that Mount Ranier is too high and hard a mountain to climb, when it's like half the height of Mount Everest.

Also, complaining that a mountain is high is missing the point of a mountain.

A few years ago on a different forum; back when Atlus decided to start adding difficulty options with their Etrian Odyssey remakes, I made the comment that doing so was like adding an escalator to a mountain. (Insinuating riding the escalator diminished the point of climbing the arduous mountain yourself.) I got berated by other forum members saying it doesn't matter how someone climbs the mountain, because they still climbed the mountain (even if they rode the escalator you see). Who can argue with 'no gamer left behind' logic like that? So I got labeled an elitist, and maybe I am. Or maybe I just believe that people can achieve difficult things if they actually try.

"Elitist" is a word people like to use when they encounter someone better than them/with higher standards than them.

Even the hardest RPGs aren't that hard.

(Does that statement make me an elitist?)

People get very defensive if someone insinuates there are right and wrong ways to play a game and are very quick to slap the "elitist" label on you. It's not restricted to any given topic, I've gotten the label for practically any opinion I have on the subject.

- Credit feeding being a poor way of playing arcade games.
- Random critical hits in Team Fortress 2 not being interesting gameplay.
- Being in favour of banning overpowered, game-breaking cards in CCGs.
- Regarding permadeath as being a vital part of the design of Fire Emblem
- Regarding death as being a vital part of the design of Fire Emblem
- Regarding grabs as being a vital part of fighting games
- Thinking that checking a guide for every single puzzles in Myst makes the game pointless.
- Finding grinding uninteresting and game-breaking.
And so on.

But yeah, most RPGs require very little strategy and it can be replaced by grinding in almost all instances.

It's a map from Wizardry IV: The return of Werdna. The arrows indicate one-direction passages, the stairs are, well stairs and the pentagrams allow you to summon monsters and "level up".

Don't know what ? or ?! indicate, probably uncharted territory.
