One, the architecture of the hardware between the PS4 and their previous machines is significantly different, and I think that getting emulation to work properly takes time and would have delayed the system's launch so they didn't want to worry about it off the bat.

Two, as you point out, is that they are trying to see how PS Now works out. However, as that link I posted indicated:
Playstation Now is my big concern - I feel like it's part of the trend of Sony backpedaling on function that gamers at one time presumed would be a given. I do not see how streaming a limited library of PSX/2/3 games over the Internet for a price per day that rivals the 'buy-it-now' price on ebay for mint condition copies of the same title is a win for gamers.

Hopefully I'm wrong and Playstation Now will co-exist with restored backwards compatibility.
(Sorry if this post comes off as trying to close down discussion or anything...just trying to explain why I am hopeful...you've made me nervous to engage you now  )
How's that?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I know. I was trying to give you a chance to not be passive aggressive.

Retro themed PS4, dang I want one.
Kinda disappointed in that honestly.

Unless I'm missing something, it just looks like a grey PS4. Can't think of many people who would glance at that and instantly associate it with the PS1.

Contrast it to something like the NES-themed GBA SP.
It has some nice subtle touches to it as well. The texture on the controller's touchpad, and on the right side of the system is custom, with a 20th anniversary print (has the button logos and a 20 in it. Also the color PS logo, which Sony hasn't used in a long time.

I'm not sure what they could really have done past that. My gut reaction would be that the light strip should be green instead of blue, since colored LEDs weren't really around yet...but it's not only blue, and is used for system notifications.
Printing Power and Eject next to the buttons on the front maybe? But I don't know if that'd really evoke the round buttons of the PS1 anyway. Further changing the front logos would have looked stronger too, but then it might mask that it's a PS4.

Possibly a custom-molded vented lower half of the system, matching the sides of the original Playstation? Doing it as a sticker (a la the GBA SP) would look really tacky, if anyone even noticed it in a normal setup.

I dunno, I think the GBA SP you mentioned had it a bit easier. Most of it is echoing the NES controller, which has printed aspects to mimic. The Dual Shock 4 is still using the same button symbols in the same colors and all that already.

Entered my name for the perorder lottery for the 20th anniversary PS4. Sony makes you jump through hoops just to preorder. Hope I get it.

Lottery, haha.

I'll laugh if it becomes a standard model a few years from now. Never know.

I doubt it'll become standard. I had to do the same with the Hagane PS3 and Hatsune Edition Vita. Both never became a standard colors. I don't think you have to do a lottery with the US model. Lotteries are a common way of ordering very limited edition goods in Japan.
