It is pretty sweet, even if it isn't my favorite in the MoH series. And the expansions, Spearhead and Breakthrough, aren't as good in my opinion as the base game.MrPopo wrote:I snagged MoH: Allied Assault since it's on a flash sale on GOG for $2.50. I remember playing this back in my high school days but I don't think I ever beat it. I do remember enjoying it so it'll be good to play it again. I think the thing that stuck out most when I first played it was how you get an M1 Garand for so much of the game, when coming off of basically every other FPS where you get various kinds of automatic weaponry with magic clips.
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

That doesn't surprise me; FPS expansions of that era were all pretty blah. Even OpFor wasn't as good as HL1.

Sure, but both it and Blue Shift feel better balanced. Did you ever play Return to Na Pali, the Unreal expansion? Jesus, what a pain that was. And the Battle Out of Hell expansion for Painkiller was pretty rough, though it had that awesome ball-bearings launcher.MrPopo wrote:That doesn't surprise me; FPS expansions of that era were all pretty blah. I still haven't gotten more than a couple missions into Unreal at a base. But I remember trying to do episodes 4 & 5 in Heretic and finding them ball-crushingly hard. So far the Quake 1 & 2 expansions haven't been too bad.

I guess I'll be waiting to try those next year as part of Together Retro. I'm looking forward to getting my ass handed to me.MrPopo wrote:I still haven't gotten more than a couple missions into Unreal at a base. I liked MoH AA. There's even good multiplayer out there for it still. The expansions were a bit shorter than I'd expect.
As for the M1 Garand, I preferred that over the automatic weapons, if only because it was more accurate.

I'm trying to play Darkest of Days, but seems the game doesn't get along well with AMD drivers.

Re: What single player FPS campaign are you playing?
MoH: Allied Assault reminded me why I never got through it years ago. It's from the "instant reaction" school of FPS design which is bad times with hitscan weaponry. Not to mention mission 5's sniper alley. This was back when the AI didn't simulate not being able to see something through the massive tree texture that you can nonetheless shoot through, so you can spend several reloads just trying to figure out where you were getting shot from in the first place.
And the ending, while they were trying to make for an exciting escape in the nick of time, suffers at the end because they toss a ton of enemies at you that all need to be killed before the waiting train opens its doors (why wasn't it already open?). Very frustrating because there are also a couple snipers that you only become aware of once you've finally killed everything else and can breathe.
Definitely a mixed ride of a game.

Hell, you think this is bad? Try out Iron Storm. It makes MOH:AA seem supremely fair.MrPopo wrote:MoH: Allied Assault reminded me why I never got through it years ago. Both those areas I had to restart on the most. Did NOT like Sniper Alley.MrPopo wrote:Not to mention mission 5's sniper alley.
