Well I finally finished the first episode of Quake. I think I've mentioned elsewhere that I really do take an abnormal amount of time to work my way through FPS. I'm not sure why that is, whether it's that I devote a a lot of time to risk assessment and management, or whether I do a lot of backtracking for power-ups or what, but there it is. In fairness I've been splitting time between this and a few other games as well. Quake is absolutely awesome, although I find it to be a game that I enjoy more when I play in short segments. If I play for extended periods it starts to feel slightly same-y. This is not at all a knock against the game, but moreso an example of the sentiments expressed in the depth of gameplay vs repetition thread. I've been enjoying it a lot, but just in short bursts taking down a level or two at a time.

This will probably be the extent of my progress for a bit, as I'm leaving for a 10 day trip starting Friday that will take me away from all forms of gaming other than perhaps my trusty PSP. Have fun everyone!

Ha! Now that's really something! Thanks for passing that along. I'll have to check it out, and report back if it turns out to be something worthwhile. I'm curious to see how the controls translate, but this could be pretty nifty.

LOL, I just realized I have a physical copy of Quake, I should give it a try tonight, I wonder if it is hard to get running on Win7.

Completed Episode 2. The final level wasn't simply just a boss encounter, but a level in and of itself, with the actual boss encounter falling a little flat. 2 Vores that were easily defeated with 5 rockets each and a pillar to shield myself from their explosive shots. That paled in comparison to the huge impressive lava boss of Episode 1.

On to Episode 3.

That's actually a common feature of many of the games that came out in the shareware era. Many of those games have two real bosses in them; the first is the boss at the end of the first episode/section that was released as shareware, the second is the final boss of the game. You see the same thing in Descent; the two bosses are at the end of level 7 (final level of shareware) and the end of the last level.

So far, I have read Masters of Doom and played through the first episode of Quake.

Mostly a real change from when I originally played it, due to actually knowing how to use the mouse. When it came out, I was only used to playing with keyboard control, and that's...terrible. So it was all cheat codes and stuff just to get by.

Also quicksaves, which make things a lot more tolerable

downloaded Masters Of Doom on my tablet at the start of the month. Just now realizing that the month is half-over...

I have been playing Quake 4 though, and enjoying it quite a bit. It's super linear. But it's fun. I've been exploring the alien research lab, which def is a creepy environment.

Also, as it overlaps, I want to address this: I think it takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. And I'm a huge man.

So here's the thing - I'm starting to really see the merits of keyboard & mouse for FPS games. It's weird. I was so against it. Made no sense to me. Straight up confused me. But I'm really getting comfortable. My fingers go to WASD now and I have to say "no I'm typing, go to home position." Weird.

Enough to the point I'm researching keyboard & mouse upgrades. My Coolermaster set is nice, but it's pretty entry level. If I end up using them a lot for FPS then I'll want something better.

Oh and back to Quake 4. I hate vehicle stuff in FPS games. I mean I guess it's cool to go in a mech. But honestly, I just hate being thrown in a vehicle for a level. Stop doing that.
