Look at the obsessive "need" people have to own something like Little Samson, despite it being just an okay platformer.
And I do enjoy Panzer Dragoon Saga, but if an identical game was a $30 PlayStation title instead of a $300 Saturn game it would probably get lost in the sea of great 5th gen JRPGs.
Good post. I agree that a certain level of hype is bestowed upon expensive games and often there are better games available for less green(or whatever colour your local currency is). The issue is that this hype carries over to new gamers/collectors and depending on their preference may be drawn like the moth to the flame to buy these games and push prices even further.
Establishing true rarity is a rarity in itself as more often than not the real hard to find games are "rare" because nobody gives a crap when they do show up.

What's the fun in eliminating the hunt and always trying to get that game you don't have yet that everyone tells you that you should play. Plus I like having full shelfs even if I'm holding out for the time that snes games drop in price significantly(and maybe pick up a few cheapies here and there or even look at lots when I get a chance). If you think the prices snes games are bad just look at shantae and little samson....shantae I will probably get on my 3ds because I don't think I will ever be able to afford that one....forget it when it comes to little samson...
There's nothing wrong with having patience and hunting around for a particular item. If you want to be a collector at a slow pace and light spending it can be done - I do it to some degree and I personally know a few others who do too. I simply speak to the point that as a gamer first, I may not want a tonne of stuff all over the place, keep what I like/enjoy and toss the rest. Games do not need to played on original hardware but if you insist you also don't need the original games.
Yeah but it feels more authentic to play the original game on the original hardware if possible. The only game I will probably never play on the original hardware is shantae and little samson just because that's way too high for two games that are probably good games but not "great" and the price tag doesn't reflect that on most of these expensive games >_>

See for me I don't want the rare games at all. Sure if I find a rare game cheap ill get it, I won't be stupid but I just want the cult classics for the snes. See most of the cult classics are around 30.00 or under. Super punch out, castlevania 4, zelda, metroid will be close to 40.00 but if I only spend and buy one game a month it will give me a chance to play the game and not hoard or have too much to just have on the shelf and never play it. I have about 15 titles now for the snes so its covering me till june or so.

I live by that rule and some times go a couple of months before buying a game, unless I get rid of some first.
And the prices will never go down till our generation starts dieing. The prices got so high because our generation that grew up with this stuff are now in their 30's and 40's with the jobs to support the habit.
Each generation has related hobbies that will probably die off if they haven't already. I do know one guy with a sweet slot car track and another with a railroad track. Any coin or stamp collectors around.
When was the last time you had a quilt made for you?
I am sure some people still have these hobbies but I am sure not as many.

This is what I'm constantly saying to people who go on about high prices. We are the reason prices are so high. We created the demand with our own money and time spent on this hobby. This certainly does not excuse price gouging and slimy retail practice but it does qualify the market pricing trends we've been seeing over the last few years.

If this is true, then it you can be sure that the exact same thing will happen with all gaming generations as the target audiences for those consoles grow up and get jobs as well. Of course, we're already seeing this with most systems, but even some 360/PS3 games will one day reach these levels. It's the nature of the beast.
Even more of the reason for me to get my ps2 stuff done soon and get to collecting ps3 soon(there's just too much there to not do that system). Of course with the right amount of patience someone will be stupidly selling a expensive game for super cheap and I'll somehow nail it(since that seems to be the way I get some decent stuff as of late)

I don't know if anyone's made the analogy yet, but "classic" cars are quite similar. People who had a muscle car in the sixties or always wanted one are drawn to the originals that are severely underpowered with inferior options by today's standards. It exponentially brings up the price on something that had a sticker tag of $2,000 to well beyond new MSRPs in some cases.
There's also a market for Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, Stingray Vettes, and others have all changed aesthetically to throw a nod to their golden years and draw in the kids and admirers of that generation... much like HD remakes, "retro" indie titles, etc.
