13 pages long is a lot of a thread to read so if this has been said before, sorry. I heard somewhere that gameplay won't be flagged IF it does not have the games music in it. If you put up a video without the original game music and instead just have your voice in it doing commentary or free music...you'll be ok.

That being said fuck YouTube and Google. They have really gone to shit the last few years. First it was music getting pulled off, then it was shows/movies, now its gameplay? Are they trying to piss people off or does it just come naturally to them?

I know some gameshows have websites to fall back on but a lot of the ones I watch I don't think they do. For instance Markiplier or SomeOrdinaryGamers...I believe Yogscast has their own website so they can host videos there? But what about other Minecrafters? And to a degree AlChestBreach. I know for a fact he doesn't have a website, but again with him, he's always been really careful of music in his videos. He always makes sure to turn of the radios in Fallout 3 or NV so no copyrighted music comes up. But thats IF i'm right about the music being the real issue. If i'm wrong...we're all fucked.

James Rolfe is like the .01% of internet game reviewers that are legitimately working for a living by producing their content and make a sustainable living out of it. He is pretty much irrelevant to this whole topic. In fact, he is probably the only person period to achieve this status so far.
Irrelevant.

I don't get why people are so against people being able to make a career out of doing things on the internet, clearly whether you like it or not there is an audience for videos about video games. I watch lets plays like best friends play and those lets plays that Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw (zero punctuation) did on his youtube channel, when done well they are legitimately as entertaining as any TV show (even more so in some cases).

Also I wouldn't say Rolfe is the only person to achieve this status so far, Pure Pwnage would have easily got there first had one of their cast members not died in a car accident in 2008. In fact Pure Pwnage got it's own 8 episode TV series and it got its movie funded just as easily as the AVGN movie did.

People like James Rolfe do apply to this topic because people like him help back up an argument I have seen put up by media experts like Jaron Lanier (former Atari employee, credited for inventing "virtual reality"). The argument is this, the current online economy is not a good one, if anything it is doing more harm than good, more so to people who work in any kind of media because they are being put under pressure by pthe system we have created to give their works away for free as a way of climbing the ladder, the problem is this isn't working, people like James Rolfe are a lottery draw success story. this is why the current state of youtube is a bad thing. In the case of the musician it is trying to enforce the idea that they should give their work away for free and only make their money from live gigs and tours etc, it is not a good economic structure.

If we are going to be so selfish that we support this kind of thing happening then we will never see a healthy online economy flourish. People being able to make money off their youtube videos is a great thing because it means we found a way top create jobs through the internet.
That said there is the big elephant in the room in regards to things like copy right, in the case of someone like angry joe he is right his videos should not be getting flagged when everything he does comes under fair uses, the footage he uses is for critique and in a lot of cases he has used clips from things like trailers, something that was purposely created to be given out to be spread around.

Anyway this is a large subject. I will say this a lot of people on youtube use copyrighted material without permission, though I can't blame anyone for this because asking for permission would probably get you a big fat no, hence why we use it under fair use. A lot of people do give credit, though this does not sit well with all it has caused a lot of people to earn some goodwill with big organisations, we are already seeing this with companies speaking against youtubes new automated system because lets be honest here this isn't just creating problems for the youtube content creators, it is also causing problems for the companies who were approving of what these content creators were doing. Also the current algorithm youtube is using is causing videos to be flagged under copyright claims by companies that no longer exist, THQ has been dead for nearly a year and yet people are getting flagged by THQ, justify that.

Not sure what context you are posting that in but if you using it as an argument against the people who have been affect by this then you should know that video was made in support of the reviewers and lets playe people.

why/how can anyone disparage these folks? What the hell is wrong with their chosen way to make money or how they choose to discuss games? FFS, people get worked up over some inane shit. Why is this even considered a controversy here?

Most likely because I said online video game "reviews" stink.

No, I'd say it's more this bit:
Luke wrote:Put me in the "Thank God" column. I hate "Here's a game" videos and I'm glad they'll be wiped off the map. Rarely with any insight and never with any intelligence, I abhor 99% of the video game "reviews" online..
You're happy that people who like something that you don't won't be able to enjoy those things anymore.

Don't bother with Luke, AppleQueso, it's clear he's just trolling at this point.
