PS2 Appreciation Thread

Maybe my CRTs are getting worn out, but 480i fom the PS2 is starting to look damn retro

Picked up a GoodWill no-name TFT 4:3 VGA monitor and it works surprisingly well w/ the dreamcast+VGA adapter so maybe I find some kinda VGA adapter from the PS2...

I think that the PS2, as the longest-produced system by a long shot, is a bit of a special case. Those things were being churned out until, what, three years ago? And how many games were made for it (I think I lost count after the third billion)?

Anyway, I wouldn't call it retro, but... Y'know, I can see why people would.

I wasn't gaming when PS2 was current, but I sure wish I did. I hardly have any memories of games release or what was exciting for people back then. I really don't remember any one getting excited to play a certain on PS2 hence I have 0 nostalgia for the system


but when you see wired controllers and memory cards, its kind of retro you know... maybe the hardware is retro but not the games. I am in a place where I am getting embarrassed by the fact that we had to stay close to the console because of the wire length. Maybe we should not tell our kids about that...

Ah, yeah, that makes sense. *Geezer voice* I remember back in my day, the first time I saw Final Fantasy X, I almost puked out of pure shock. I was like, how are they going to top THIS? This... These graphics... They're so REAL!. Ahh, good times. My first nostalgia-love was the SNES, then the PSX (FFIX <3), and PS2.

Man... Thinking about that as "retro" hurts a bit. I guess this is what it's like to feel old!
I had never thought about that, but you're absolutely correct, I think.
That said, WIRED CONTROLLERS FOREVER. Still love those babies. Even if it is just nostalgia, I feel like they respond better.

I still go wired when I can. The first thing I did when I got a 360 was buy a wired controller. I just hate batteries to the point where I'm aware I'm completely irrational about it.

I know I probably posted in this thread before and I don't remember what I said but guess I now consider the PS2 retro. It's two generations behind and it's not the "console as a multimedia center" that game consoles are today. Game design and graphics have evolved enough for PS2 games to feel like older games.

Personally I don't have much nostalgia for it either. I had a GameCube during that generation though all my friends and college buddies had PS2's so I wasn't exactly unexposed to it. Most people I knew tended to be into RPGs and I've never really been. Only one of my friends was into fighters and we had most of our rumbles on the Dreamcast.

I never owned one myself despite owning a game for it which I played to death on my college roommate's PS2, Robot Alchemic Drive.

I wish I could play these games but I hate RPGs from the SNES era where its the game is extremely lengthy, boss battles are 40 min long, and a ton of grinding. Not sure if the newer titles are different...

I like wired because the batteries won't die, but its hard to give up the freedom to move with the controller and pass it around compared being tied to the console and having to drop it to the floor and come back to pick it up if you are moving any where further than 3 meters away from the console. I wonder how people used PS2 as a DVD player with such a short controller, and we laugh at wired TV remotes from older days

I noticed something, if you do not tell some one if a game is good or bad there is a lot of chance that it would become one of his favorites . This is especially true with kids who do not read general opinion of games or critics reviews. You always hear some one with an unknown favorite game from his childhood.

I think the reason for that is that they were made later in the PSX's lifecycle. FFIX came out just after the PS2 was already released (or just before, one of the two), so the really knew how to develop games for the PSX. It boggles my mind that FFVII and FFIX were made for the same console xD

If you would play FFIX, I would buy it for you. Seriously, I've bought about 15 copies of that game for friends, I hand that shit out like a Jehovah's Witness handing out bibles. It's literally that good, in my opinion. PLEASE play it if you have any interest at all (the boss battles are not 40 minutes, I can assure you. Maybe like 15, tops). It's 40 hours of pure, unadulterated fantasy goodness that you will never regret and never forget.

When I joined this website, the PlayStation had been released 13 years before, had been discontinued just two years before I signed up for this forum, and we called it retro. Now, the PlayStation 2 was released 14 years ago, has been discontinued almost two years, and we're still debating.

Ehhh....I don't really feel like this is true. Xbox to 360 was a lot closer in terms of look IMO.
