Ummmm.... and, tell me, how many of those titles you mentioned can you buy in hard copy? Then tell me how many of those FPS titles you can find in hard copy.

I rest my case.

What is your case?

That games aren't worth owning or playing unless you also get a disc.

Yes, all that fun I've had with downloadable games has been a total waste and a lie!

We know you say it was fun, but you're really dead inside.

Wow, that's kind of a silly stance to have. I mean physical media is nice and all, but not necessary to play and enjoy the game. I guess you're one of those people that just collects and doesn't play anything.

I'm agreeing that it's hard to find many good new 2D games these days unless you download them. Every one of those games mentioned required you to buy them online as downloadables. The quantity of them isn't a lot, either, although there are more this generation then the last one. Plenty of people do not buy games that are download-only. They are not really available to the masses are FPS games are.

This just in; people's tastes in genres change over time, but there are games made that aren't of the most popular genre.

I suppose it depends on what you're comparing to. Angry Birds has been downloaded over a billion times and (at least at one point) had 200 million players on a given day.

CoD Black Ops, by contrast, sold what, 20-30 million?

I know what you mean - stuff like Dust usually isn't breaking a million sales, much less ten. Minecraft is probably close (around 3 million XBL + 6 million PC last I'd seen). However, we're easily at the point where direct-download isn't really a barrier for the vast majority of users.

Yeah, but Angry Birds isn't really a 2D game in the traditional sense that I am, and probably a lot of us, would be thinking of. It's more of today's Tetris/Dr. Mario/etc.

I just really, really like having physical media available, and I am sticking to it! Yes, I do have a hundred or so games downloaded on PSN (     ), but I don't like it dammit!!!! I generally own the physical versions of them (I mean, more than half of those games are PS1 and PC Engine downloads of games I have anyway). I wish stuff like Wipeout HD* and Flower were also on disc.

*Yes, I know it came out in Europe.

Oooooooohhhhhhhh.

So that's why there aren't any big name publishers that are mostly known for adventure games and named after mountains or include random stuff in the boxes anymore.

I'm with you there. I prefer to buy a physical copy if available. Some games I haven't bought due to lack of one, and others I've wound up buying twice when a physical copy was made available. I just don't think most people share the sentiment.

Flower was included on the Journey Collector's Edition physical release that came out at the end of August, btw (also included fl0w).
