Had an audition last night. The bassist of this band is/was the bassist of the band I got into as a drummer a few months ago, and then got promptly booted out of. He (jerry) started a new band and asked me to audition as a guitarist, rather than drums.

I think it went well. Only problem is that I forgot my earplugs and now I have a raging case of tinnitus. It's like I can hear the hum of the universe. And it's still going, 9 hours later :(

I think I have permanent tinnitus, but I also think I was born with a bit of it as I started getting it before drumming. It's just part of being a loud musician  . Even with earplugs and headphones I still develop a bad ringing after some shows. You should be okay. I've had it last for 24 hours in extreme cases.

When I got my physical done last year, I had a hearing test performed, and it was determined that I had lost a little hearing in my left ear (which is closest to the snare), I immediately went to Guitar Center and got some of those Heros ear plugs with the noise filter. They work great, and you can still hear whats going on pretty well. Cost like $23 bucks or something like that, but in the long run its way worth it.

Absolutely agree. I use earplugs as well as earmuffs at the gun range, and when I play shows I'll use plugs. When I play drums though, I don't like to have a muffled sound, so what I do is use a pair of Skull Candy ear buds. The kind that have those little rubber membranes and kinda go "fffffooomp" into your ear canal when you insert them. I find that they drown out enough sound to where it's not deafening, but still allows me to hear detail, conversation, etc.

I think this time I was just so worried about forgetting a cable, or my stand, or my guitar, my strap, etc. I remember telling myself 'dont forget the ear buds' and then halfway to practice I realized I had forgotten them. I could have just stopped at walgreens and gotten some ear plugs but I was lazy.

I still have a ringing, but it's not nearly as loud as it was before, it's definitely fading, thankfully.

There are musician earplugs (possibly a bit expensive) that will preserve the sound and just "lower the volume". See if it is worth it for you.

Well I'm trying to learn bass guitar. Practicing for an hour or two every day. I've had one for years (it was a gift), but never had time to dedicate to it. The only reason I started now is because I got roped into these various "talent show" performances here at the elementary school, where me and some other dudes play some simple songs for the entertainment of children.

I'm actually picking this up faster than I thought I would. I've always been scared of sheet music, but I studied for a couple of hours and picked up the basics. Still prefer tabs though.

My biggest problem so far is that I can't play with any decent speed - I have to play slow songs. And I know this is cliché as hell, but I feel as if my fingers aren't long enough, those first few frets are really tough.

Anyway, I'll keep at it and I'll post in this thread if I have anything interesting to say/ask.

I decided that I was in need of a guitar upgrade, electrically speaking. My two current guitars are of lower quality and my amp squeals terribly at higher volume. Plus I sold my gigging guitar, a Gibson SG, ages ago. So I went out on a hunt and found this Strat:

I actually wasn't really looking for a Stratocaster, or even a Strat style guitar. I was wanting another Les Paul style guitar, but not as heavy. I've owned an SG and found a nice one, but I didn't really want another SG. I found a really nice Gretsch at a music store that I didn't have any credit for, so I went to my local Guitar Center in search for that Gretsch. They didn't have it, unfortunately, and I didn't want to order one because I need to physically play a guitar if I'm going to buy it. So at the wife's behest, I tried this Strat (Mexican made) and actually really liked it's sound, so I ended up getting it. Not a bad deal. It was mispriced by $50 (in my favor) and I had a $75 giftcard I got from work for being a badass, so I was able to knock $125 off the price! Score!

Not huge on the black, but it's not too bad. It's still very pretty, and I love the bridge position humbucker. 3 single coil pickups was also on my "list of things to not buy," so this one worked out great. It's a pretty rockin' little axe.

Hey everyone! My band finally published it's facebook page. Here's the page: https://www.facebook.com/CountCorruptula

Hit us up with a like if you please (or dont, if you hate us, lol).. Also here's a video of us jamming out at practice last week.

We're still rough around the edges, but it's still fun stuff.

I've uploaded a new song to my acoustic project, Payment Due. The song was recorded with my phone. I wrote it a while back and finally pushed myself to record it. It was pretty painful, and I crack a few times. It's about the death of my father, and it's called JEL92497.

JEL are my father's (and my) initials, and 92497 is the day he was killed in a car accident.

So this past Friday, our drummer bailed on us, claiming his girlfriend had fallen down some stairs, and he had to take care of her. Come Saturday morning, we all see her post stuff on Facebook. Pictures of her out with the girls, and the drummer. WTF chad?

So back to Friday, the bassist asks if I can fill in on drums. The guitarist states he wants to fire Chad for this, (hes been growing tired of him as of late) and suggests that I become the drummer. Normally, I'd jump at the chance because I want to concentrate on drums, but I actually bought a new guitar when I joined the band. I didn't buy it BECAUSE of the band, but the band was sort of the final push over the edge. I'd been needing one anyway, so it worked out. But I figured my wife would murder me for buying a guitar, and then 'not using it' in the band.

Also I was really worried that my drumming would suck since I hadn't sat behind a kit longer than 5 minutes in a couple of months. I kinda sorta knocked it out of the park though, to my surprise. I messed up a lot, sure. But not nearly as much as I thought. I was playing so hard I actually broke two new sticks. Promarks, even. It was a lot of fun, and now, tbh - I wouldn't mind taking over on drums, lol.

No idea what's gonna happen with the current drummer though. He's an alcoholic, and always looking for a way to get out of practice. I think he's already made his choice about being in the band, but hasn't been able to bring himself to quit.
