I'd just use the rule of thumb, "Is this as epic as Shadow of The Colossus?". If not, it's not epic.

I dunno. Putin on a Ritz is pretty Epic, from where I'm sitting.

If you wanna judge it by an NES game, I'd say Ninja Gaiden is a pretty good barometer for 'Epic Difficulty'.
