But seriously, if you thought that game was good, you would probably find the MSX games to be fantastic. The NES game is a slopped together knock off of the MSX game at best, and nearly a different and, and imo bad game, at worst. Tons of missing dialogue, looks/plays/sounds worse, way easier, missing boss battles, entire missing sections, the NES version is significantly more confusing and random in design, the list goes on. Strangely, the OST is one part where I almost would say the NES version is better, as it has some unique songs that are actually pretty sweet. There is also a lot of the same though.

Not that I expect you to rush out and play the MSX version because some guy on the internet said it was better, but I would really would recommend you check out Metal Gear 2 sometime based on your post. It is an amazing game and legitimately one of the best in the entire series, and one of the coolest games of that generation I have played. If you liked NES MG it's basically guaranteed to be a home run for you.

It's on my list, but it isn't easy to find.

And if you read my full post, you'd know I've beaten Metal Gear dozens of times since it was first released on the NES. Sure there were better games out at the time, but this was my introduction to stealth games, and I still love it.

are the MSX games on the PS3 collection, or only on the PS2 MGS2 re-release?

Actually, I would say it is clear from your post that you've played it several times, but not that you've ever beaten it.

Pretty darn sure they are on there.

They're on the Subsistence release of MGS3 on the PS2, and included in the HD and Legacy collections as well.

I have Subsistence for the PS2. Sweet.

And yeah, I've beaten Metal Gear dozens of times. Most of the games on my list I've beaten several times.

Nothing really jumped out as "he has beaten this dozens of times"... but even so that wouldn't really detract from my point, I would very highly recommend you the real games. When NES MG comes up I'm immediately reminded of bad arcade conversions or stuff like that and am overwhelmed by the urge to suggest people sit down with Kojima's actual intended experience.

It boggles me far more that seemingly no one talks about Metal Gear 2 though, even after the PS2 release. I have no doubt if it had a (faithful) SNES port in the US it would be hailed as a timeless classic among the other SNES greats.

Metal Gear on NES isn't a bad arcade conversion. It's it own thing.

Not saying the game is good by any stretch of the word "good", but I've always had a thing for the game. It obviously doesn't want you to win, and the clues aren't always as obvious as huge cracks in walls or "Fight hand to hand". It may have been the first game I played that required me to think, so there is that too. A badge of honor beating that game without cheats people deserve.

Is it possible to beat SPY HUNTER on the NES or PS2?

I need to have a have at those games if I can add them to the list.

One of the most popular game kid myths when I was growing up was that there was a level you could fly a helicopter on the NES version. It's also the only game I use the NES max controller with.

Like the arcade version, I don't think that Spy Hunter on the NES has an ending...but I may be wrong about this. You can easily play through the PS2 game in an afternoon, however.

Should you just skip straight to Metal Gear 2? Or do you need to play Metal Gear 1?
