Man, this thing has really become a centerpiece of my home. My daughter loves trying out all of the old games that were collecting dust and I love how the saves are stored on the system so she doesn't accidentally wipe them off the cart.
Aside from the weird Mario vs Donkey Kong glitches, I've only run into one other issue. I'm not sure if it's my cart specifically, but I have to lift up Super Godzilla to get the Retron5 to recognize it. If I push it all the way down, it doesn't see the cart at all. I've seen some video reviews with the same issue with other cartridges.

Not sure about SNES, but with the NES some games, the bottom side of the cart row of pins are covered in that green film to such a height away from the board itself that the system has issues reading the games which is just weird. I have no idea if that SNES game is so as I don't have it to look, but maybe?

It's great, isn't it? My 8 year old daughter starting playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and I think she's hooked! It really is great to know that a lot of these classic games from our youth still hold up and kids today enjoy them. Candy Crush aint got shit on the classics!jinx wrote:Man, this thing has really become a centerpiece of my home. My daughter loves trying out all of the old games that were collecting dust

Candy Crush is just a drag and drop idiot non-button play really and it's played out since it has been done for over a decade already with a different coat of paint and slight rule changes.
SMB3 actually was and is creative and well made, a solid challenge though for many not so much now having been learned well, but to the new, it's a worthy hill to climb.
My 2 almost 3 year old likes asking for Mario and Kirby, can't do junk other than more or less barely move the d-pad and mash the button to jump or suck, but hey it's something and she digs it so why not right?

Well, my NES slot pins completely bit it this weekend, so I'm initiating an RMA through Hyperkin. So far their customer service has been swell, and I just sent them a copy of my receipt and a picture of the broken pins. Not saying this to crap on the product (I absolutely love mine, and am sad that I'm gonna need a week or two without it), but be careful with the really tight cart slots. My NES slot, regardless of how carefully, gently, whatever I removed the cart, never ever loosened up and ended up breaking completely, so be careful and watch your pins and make sure if it breaks you get in an RMA while your machine is still under warranty.
It sounds like these complaints are becoming rarer and rarer, and given that my machine was from the first run/shipment, I'm hoping it's something that they've gotten ironed out with subsequent manufacturing runs.

My daughter is the same age. We have similar experiences with a lot of games. She often forgets to jump over the first goomba in Super Mario Bros., but if she can get past it, she does fairly well. Pretty proud of her for solving the first puzzle in "Mario vs. Donkey Kong" with very little help from me.Tanooki wrote:My 2 almost 3 year old likes asking for Mario and Kirby, can't do junk other than more or less barely move the d-pad and mash the button to jump or suck, but hey it's something and she digs it so why not right?
That blows. Most of the bent pin complaints I've seen are for the NES slot. My NES collection only consists of Black Box games, so I haven't really played enough to experience this. Hope it works out for you!DonSilvestre wrote:Well, my NES slot pins completely bit it this weekend, so I'm initiating an RMA through Hyperkin.

...DAMN that Genesis death grip. It wasn't that big of a deal until I started playing Sonic 2. I slammed my hand into the counter above the Retron5 trying to get the game out and cut my hand open...
Re: WELL THIS IS INTERESTING.. Retron 5
I think if I let her do it more than every couple weeks she'd probably get somewhere, but I don't.
Her earliest play was an infant on accident. I had her in my lap playing river city ransom on a gb micro and she grabbed the right side and mashed the hell out of A until this dude died on screen with the classic BARF! line which was awesome with her giggling at it. Considering what kids that age(2-3) can do with a tablet, it's only lack of use and time clearly.
Don that sucks yet doesn't since they're being fast and good about it. I think looking at your situation versus others a month or two ago, you're doing it the right way and it's a legit problem. The more I look back at the onslaught of the vocal minority bitching on their facebook page and other forums, much of the whining were the same people most likely not dropping it and many others being brainless parrots to stir the pot. I've asked more than once to the tech about it and was told that the actual system failures/pin failure issue of total systems is just a few percent of them, not even near double digits (10%+) but was acknowledged it was there on some (like yours.) Those who act like adults and not petulant brats about it seem to get prompt solid service and a fix and that seems the most fair of all. Be a bitch, get treated like one. Be a gentleman/lady, and get treated like one.

It's getting so bad now that Hyperkin had to release a video on the right way to remove cartridges from the Retron 5
I just realized something last night too, I knew that the screenshots are taken in the console's native resolution, but if you "upscale" them yourself (resize), they still look pretty good. This image from Phelios (Genesis) was taken from the Retron 5 and resized to 640x480.

LOL! This reminds me of the time my 3 (almost 4 year old) daughter was watching me play God Hand a few months back. If you've played the game, then you know it is kind of silly (ok, there is no "kind of"...the story is straight up silly) but there is a part about mid way through the game where the enemies (after beating the boss) bend over and shake their butts at your and then "PE-OW" run off like they do in the cartoons. Well she happen to be in the room at that specific part and she laughed her ass off. She then started saying "shake your booty" and would ask me if I was going to play the "shake your booty" game. Lol.Tanooki wrote:I think if I let her do it more than every couple weeks she'd probably get somewhere, but I don't.Her earliest play was an infant on accident. And I have tried to teach her SMB. She can't jump over the first goomba either, although she always says she "is real good at this game".
