Actually you can use different portraits in the PSP games - you can choose to display those from the 2001 PC versions of Ys I & II instead. They look like this:

The 80's artwork is breathtaking even now.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yeah that hand-drawn stuff is amazing.
Another annoying thing about the non-Turbo Duo versions I just remembered: in most versions of Ys I you're forced to hit a level cap about halfway through the game in order to inflict damage upon a certain (infamous) boss.
Once you hit that cap fighting enemies becomes completely superfluous, which is kind of strange for an RPG (you don't need money in the second half of the game either).
On the Turbo Duo though, your experience transfers from Book I to Book II. In fact, they play out as one long game rather than two separate ones that the player selects from a menu.

I really think we should do Ys II in next year's Together Retro

I'd be down.
There are a few more ports I need to try. I haven't played it on the Famicom or Saturn, for instance.

Had a perfect game of Sonic last night. All the chaos emeralds on the first try, no lives lost.

The graphics on the PSP one look great, but yeah I agree, the character portrait on the Turbo is better.

Impressive. I usually have to try twice to complete a Sonic game, and I still lose lives.
